 The main building of Berlin Tempelhof Airport right in the center of Berlin/Germany was designed and built (though not completed) in the late 1930ies by Nazi architect Ernst Sagebiel to demonstrate the power of Berlin and the "Third Reich". Thus the Nazi regime aimed to present not only Europe's largest airport then but with 284.000 squaremeters one of the world's largest buildings also. The airfield itself had been opened in 1923.
After WWII used by the US Air Forces to provide the western parts of the city with the airlift during the Soviet blockade in 1948/49 and for military purposes during the Cold War, it was almost forgotten in the 1980ies but revitalized after German (and Berlin) reunification in 1990.
Since most air traffic has been moved to larger, modern airports outside the city center (Tegel and Schoenefeld) Tempelhof Airport has been closed by October 30, 2008, until then only few domestic and Eurpoean flights and some private pilots were left to using the airfield.
While the facilities are partially abandoned, the building is protected by law from severe changes as an architectural monument and still resists falling into oblivion. However political as well as public discussion about the future use of the property is still controversial and has not lead to reasonable plans yet that may have a chance to be realized soon.
