I began photography as a hobby back in 1970. I acquired my first 35mm SLR in 1971. Digital photography has changed everything for me. I take many more photographs now. The instant feedback is invaluable. The digital darkroom opportunities afforded by Photoshop are incredible. I love photography of any kind, but find my interests tend toward, nature and wildlife, aerial and aviation, and travel.
Perhaps one of the most rewarding and yet frustrating experiences about PhotoSIG has to do with the critiques. You will find plenty of people with apparently very little photography experience perfectly willing to critique your photos with comments that clearly make no sense. You must accept it. On the other hand, you will receive critiques from people with very impressive portfolios and whose advice can be very valuable. You will find people of expertise who differ on how they would change your photo, or how they would crop it. You must learn not to take the critiques personally. Accept what is helpful to you, and dismiss the rest. Photography is very subjective. Remember, these are your photographs. You are the one you must ultimately please. You should always strive for improvement, and do not necessarily believe that just because you are not receiving a lot of thumbs up that your photos are not good. You will see some amazing, photos here. Some of them will be positively inspirational. You will learn what makes a good photograph, at least among the members of this group. You will also see that the number of views a photo has may have to do more with the subject, or appearance of the thumbnail, than the true technical aspects of the photo. Hopefully, this site will lead to a greater enjoyment and understanding of photography for you.
