Instead its original, having the atmosphere from a past era which suits the cute kid and its clothing. The atmosphere is strengthened, I find, by the darkish circle around the image.

I would have opened up the lens more to reduce the depth of field in order to make the background less distracting.

Technically it is superb and I like the lighting a lot. I guess this photo not meant to stand on its own, but that it is meant to be used in a context where the book is relevant - if not, I would change the composition and remove the book.

If you crop as much as you can without breaking the frame provided by the surrounding foliage you will shift the focus of interest (the grass seeds) out of the center of the image and lighten the image from the top.

In order to improve the photo I would not only try and lighten the dark lower left corner which draws the eye, but would also like to address the band at the left edge of the photo.
