John, the shot you have submitted here is very simple and has a nice flow leading us to a vanishing point. The problem is the vanishing point is blown out as well as the area above the passenger cars of the train. This image might have come out better if you had taken it with a polarizing filter. I think that would have also helped on the area reflected in the glass.
You have a basic white building that of the railroad station with a tiled raised platform. The...

Marshall, I think it was very creative of you to take this shot for the "Vintage" category. I think that there can be some very broad definitions, with arguments to accompany each different definition, as to what falls in to a particular category for the scavenger hunt. IMHO, sometimes just taking a photograph of a "vintage" item is enough to meet the requirements of this category. Then you have to look at what is considered a "vintage" item. I have two "slip sticks"...

Donna, since I am one of the last ones to be getting in my critiques I am mostly likely echoing those comments made by others. I like your decision to go with black and white. In doing so you have created enough contrast between the liquid, glass, and the white background to make a very striking image.
With a few exceptions everything looks very good. While you have the glass centered in the image by tilting it you have effective created a diagonal crossing of the...

Mindaugas, I like the concept of what your try to capture in this image. The panning looks to be effective but with the seeds being in a clump and slightly out of focus it gives very little for the viewer to focus on. In contrast the background colors are great and it definitely shows signs of panning making this and excellent entry for the "Panning" category and an abstract.
A couple of thoughts came to mind as I was going over my critique. Depending on the original...

Istanbullu, this is a very nice image. I like the way you have captured the leaf's radial vein pattern to act as a backdrop to the drops of water. I also like the clarity shown in the water that the leaf is floating on.
I find the crop interesting and can not decide whether I would want more space around the current edges of the leaf you present or not. This is one of those points that can be argued either way in my opinion.
The other item of concern is the...

David, this is a very interesting interpretation of panning! The capture of the stars contrasted against the blue of the nighttime sky is very good.
Things that I think would have helped this image are First, I wish that the constellation was presented larger then it currently is. Second is the I since the object is to make the constellation stationary I think that if there have been some rotational blur in one direction that it would enhance I believe you are...

David, you have very imaginative image for submission to the "Vintage" category. I like the tinted border as it adds some age to the image.
Composition and technicals match fairly well with what was available in the early sixties. Here is a link for a similar actual image Electric Peak from Bunsen Peak, Yellowstone National Park. As you will notice there is a copyright notice from the company that makes the card so you had the right idea there just was mistaken in...

Marshall, what an unique and creative image you have presented for the "Panning" category. I agree that it does not meet the classic follow-a-moving-object pan,. It does however present us with a different take since you have a used the movement of being I a car to create this image as apposed to doing it by hand. You have created an image that give a sense of movement towards an object that is at a distance point of the viewers perspective. I like the coloring and...

David, I agree with you that a lot of soccer moms and dads would not be happy if you did not get their favorite star in focus, while having the ball in focus and partially outside the frame. In this image the ball and not the player is now the focus of the image.
The only thing I can think of that would help it some is to increase the depth of field such the boy is a little less blurred.
Colors are good and I like the diagonal motion created by having the boy in the...

Del, this is a nice image for the "Panning" category. I like the sharpness of the girl, except for the lower part of her legs, which look to be slightly blurred. The background and her "spotter" are nicely blurred making this an effective panning shot.
In regards to composition I would have like to seen more space in front of the girl so that there would more of an impression of and area she would be moving into. Having the "spotter" included into the image adds an...

Del, I find the slight sepia color very effective for this shot. The curving pathway you have adds some interest, as it gives you the visual affect of being on the path walking back to the barn. Even though the present crop does cut off part of the metal shelter / barn on the right I do not find that as bothersome as the large group of corn stalks in the immediate foreground on the left side of the image. If believe that this group of stalks on the left draws our...

Del, with only one leaf really backlighted and the sun actually behind the cloud I really do not get a feel of a strong "Contre-jour" effect in this photograph. I do like the way the leaves and tassels are bend over by the wind.
I would have preferred that the one leaf that is cut off on the left hand side either be completely included or trimmed off the stalk to clean up the image.

Karin, I think that this is a nice concept you started with here for your contre-jour entry. I like how you used the plants seedpod to block the sun to try and get the shot off clearer. Question, if the you had placed the seed pod directly in front of the sun would there still be enough light around the pod to create the star pattern flare around it? If so this might have made for an even more intriguing image.
You do have nice DoF around the pods and I like the way...

Ian, I look at this photograph and think that this could have been a image taken by some foreign war correspondent during a walk through of some bombed out town only to be pitched in to a drawer or some box only now to be taken out and rediscovered.
The graininess and scratches are very effective coupled to the monotone colors. DoF, contrast and lighting all work well here.
The only draw back to the image is the framing. The double mat style appears to modern. I...

Robin I think you made an excellent choice in using this boat you your subject in the vintage category. With it being land bound and tilted at an angle it truly looks as if it has been abandoned for quite so time.
DoF and composition looks great. I like that some of the topside bridge is washed out as it adds to the look of a vintage snapshot. I kind of wished that there were some graininess that you see in film type photographs. Or, as a second option maybe add...
