Great capture!! It is just like my dog and cat!! The dog used to carry the cat when he was a kitten around by his head throughout the house! They were best of friends. They would sleep together and if the dog openned her mouth, the cat would stick his head inside!! The cat was, also, a black and white!
IT IS A SHAME THAT PEOPLE ARE TOO "LAZY" TO READ THE PHOTOGRAPER'S COMMENTS!!!

Okay first off, this critique is not over the controversy in this photo, but I am commenting to add in adjustments that I think could clarify this, and put aside this whole controversy. Reasoning behind my 2TD is the technical issues and the confusion that it has sparked and that I get what is happening here is a snapshot, so I understand this isn't a professional photo taken in a studio, however, I do feel that a sharper image of the cat and dog would help alot, also a less than startling angle of photography so that the playtime between the two isn't quite as startling to the viewer. Thats whats probably started all of this, is the huge shock this photo delivers upon looking at it, and while I am not one for submitting photos for their shock value, in terms of delivering on that, this photo does deliever till the comments are read and its understood whats going on here and then its easier to ease off. I'd suggest reshooting this at a better angle if the oppurtunity crops up again at a more neutral angle that expresses a much more playful mood and expression between them. There's no real need to get excited here, the technicalities are bad, but whats needed here is a more neutral reshoot, a couple cups of coffee to ease what looks like five years of solid controversy, and moving on.

I have to agreed, even if they are playing????, there animals, and even animals that grow up together, ( wild as well) can turn on each other. whats to prevent him from hurting her? even in playing? poor taste is right and if you wanted to see a reaction, what is obviously what you got, you got it. cause had you not been looking for an reaction, you wouldnt have put such a poor quality pic in there. its amazing what some will do for attention.

For all the people that gave 2TU or 3TU because they're oh so offended by this so called horrible act of animal cruelty:
READ THE ****ing photographer's comment!
This is no animal violence in any way, this is just 2 loving animals playing. The spots on the carpet are not blood, intestines, or anything. The cat's expression is great, it looks aggresive, but he/she is just showing that she has a great time. The dog looks serious, and yes, this COULD have been an extremely cruel and offensive shot, IF it were really a dog and a cat fighting for their lives, but IT IS NOT! I agree that technically, this is a pretty bad picture: The colours are flat, the contrast is low, the dogs's eye is annoying, the picture is very noisy. A lot of things to improve, but no matter how you people: This is NOT an offensive or repugnant picture. Please, please, READ before you speak.
Luka, keep an eye on these 2 friends, you could get a lot of interesting and playful shots from them, you just need to improve quite a bit on the technicalities. Don't let all those highly flammable personalities discourage you. Keep shooting!
Cheers, Ruud

I've looked through Branislav's portfolio for some hint of evidence which would lend support to accusations of cruelty or the contrary. No indication either way. My initial reaction upon first seeing this picture was one of delight
which quickly turned to astonishment by the sight of all the red thumbs My delight had been due to the unusual but not unheard of sight of a cat and dog
enjoying one another in play, fuzzy as the focus is. Okay, it's not the best quality snapshot but I am glad I got to see it. Being an animal lover myself
I'm stumped by all the outrage. It's an unusual situation for a cat and dog
to be buddies, true. All the more reason to enjoy it.
More unusual still, a few days ago,I don't remember which major newspaper
thhough I wish I could, there was a picture story of a lion in a zoo who had lost her cubs and as a result gone into serious depression. In an effort to
raise her spirits her keepers put into her lair a litter of piglets whom she immediately adopted and I wish you could all see her lying on her side suckling
her new family.Red thumb people, please reconsider.Looking at the cat I see her body seems perfectly relaxed. I feel that if she were being hurt she'd be curled up and vigorously defending herself full bore with all those sharp claws.

I thing that this dog is just joking, hes not serious, hes just playing. Or they both pose for photographer. Cat looks happy. They are happy family thats clear like clear day.
Good composition, but better sharpness and better light would be good.

I wish I would have responded earlier, but I haven't been back to this bad photo in a long time. The photographer edited the comments after others and myself already posted. He did not go into the detail explaining the situation. I still would have given thumbs down, but maybe not 3. If you saw this photo without reading the new "playful" comments, I think anyone would find it distasteful.

Sorry but there seems to be quite a few idiots here that are quite happy to slate anything that they can twist in thier heads to being bad. Its nature that cats and dogs that live together playfight, anybody that has owned a cat and dog at the same time will aggree. I quote for all u idiots that missed this in the photographers comments "Theye are big friends. Djina is grown up in company of Macan and this is their everyday play." and its really not hard to see that from the photograph either! As for the carpet being a bit dirty, you cannot choose where animals play or do things, you cant shout cut and expect the to do it all again somewhere else, they are not actors for gods sake!!!!!
As for the photo itself, the bluryness does help to the photos effect to a certain extent, but is possibly slightly overdone, and i think that the dogs eye should have been photoshopped to make it less bright.

yes rape and murder is everyday life but if I saw it happening I would do something to stop it and NOT photograph it.I think you gave this cat to this dog for this picture and I hope the correct authorities see this and soon. I find it repulsive and extremely mean and viscious....also for all of you who insist the dog is playing you are wrong, the dog first breaks the cat's neck and that is why it can't scratch it's eyes out or protect itself..and that is blood on the floor and this idiot probably had her declawed too!

I can't believe the complete ignorance of most of the comments writen here. THE DOG AND CAT ARE PLAYING! I agree, the photo technically sucks, but please, get a clue. Do any of you own cats? Do you think one of the most agile creatures on this planet couldn't escape from a dog if it wanted to? Do you think the dog was going to rip the cats head off? GIVE ME A BREAK! I'm a big animal rights supporter and pet owner and I certainly think the cat and dog are best of friends. Would you prefer that these animals sleep all day, growing old and overweight with no excitement in their lives?
To me this photo deserves 1TU - in need of improvement. From a technical standpoint, I would recompose the image and capture it using a faster shutter in a more well lit area being aware that dog's eyes reflect odd colors.
I highly disagree with the god statements, this is not, in any way, the place for such bs.
PEOPLE, we are all here to learn from our photos - lets use this great resource like it was intended.

Not a great photo technically, but I think you've captured the 'action' - whatever its true nature may be - well. Some of the comments made about this are just plain silly. You've clearly explained the context of the image. On that basis I cannot see the problem. Nobody here, no matter how much they know about animal behavour, can possible see enough from this to make a contrary judgement.

The administrators are just as guilty in the promotion of animal cruelty as the person that took this photograph as far as I'm concerned! I don't want to be at a place that promotes this shit! And why in the hell would anyone allow a German Shepherd to place his mouth around a cats neck? Instead of taking the photo maybe the idiot should have been sticking up for the cat? Why haven't the administrators deleted this photograph?????

Not a terribly good shot, but I have to stick up for the subject matter. My boxer and "his" kitty play like this all the time. I have seen my own dogs kill cats outside and it is very quick and they usually just put their paw on the back of the cat to break it's back. This picture is play time.

3up to help ofset some of the idiots. and maybe get this one listed as most controvercial and not just worst. Also, the technical side didnt really bother me. Why do so many people seem to think that good technique means perfect crystal clear images? So times its harder to get controled distortion than pefect foccus/exposure. Any goof can press the button on an expensive camera set on auto and get a clear shot and then run it through the computer to fix anything the camera didnt. I think the grain and blur are just right..and the blue eye is great. I grew up with german shepherds and cats...of course this is play. I thought it was funny how many animal activists called you stupid or sick and then advised kicking the dog...

They're playing.. I couldn't understand why this was one of the lowest rated photos on photosig until I read the idiot posts about killing the cat. Here's 3.

At last a really controversial picture. If they're just playing (as the cat's closed paws - no claws there! - seem to indicate), I can't understand that stain under her body which looks like blood. ??? 1TU anyway for the effort and the boldness to post a picture in such an environment... gosh, some seem to never ever read the photog's comments...

OK, here's the deal. The photo appears quite bad, both in technical merit and in apparent subject matter. I rotated it and lightened it and I must say I have never seen a dog "play" with a cat (I've seen lots) with that pose before. But we'll give you the benefit of the doubt until you submit another shot of the same cat and dog in a more friendly pose. We'll have to trust you on this one.
The other thing is, after looking at your "other" animal pictures (page 1), I am led to believe by this submission that you took none of them.

Ok we all know the technical problems with this but some folks here need to read your comments. I used to have two large dogs (Chow and Husky/wolf) and two cats and they did this stuff all day. Some folks have no sense of reality.

have u noticed that nearly all the minus 3 scores haven't even bothered to critique it ??!!!

Interesting comments in these critiques. Did anyone bother to rea your comments? I'm judging on technical quality not content. COmposition is great. Image is however out of focus. I would suggest a faster shutter speed to avaoid any motion blur in an image like ths. Good shot though. Please take the time to critique my abstract photo and let me know what you think.

It's out of focus, and the picture itself is ugly. As for the subject... would the author please clarify something? Is the cat alive? Or did the dog kill the cat in this picture? Some things just shouldn't be photographed, I don't care what anyone says. But hey, that's just my opinion. Celebrate life, not death.

Technically this photo is poorly executed. The three thumbs are for all the people who have their heads so far up their own arses in interpreting a simplistic image that they completely miss the point. I never realised that there were that many animal behaviourists on the site.

Photograph is poor quality, the use of a photo to directly generate contraversy isn't new. I have several cats and a dog - they play like this for hours the cats take care of them selves and have fun at the dog's expense.

The quality of this photo is bad, but it is huge the way you succeeded in powering up the effect of struggle and also to make bigger critique. I know how it looks like when a dog is killing a cat, and I also know how it looks like when a cat and a dog are playing together. This dog isn't trying to kill the cat at all (it isn't even trying to bite) and the cat isn't afraid at all. But the way you made it made so many people think it was "offensive and repugnant" that I had to congratulate you ! Well done ! Btw, the bright spot on the dog's eye is perfect to make people thing it's a wild crazy hound ! :o)

It is a sad day when people who call themselves photographers have to rely on behaviour such as this to gain a large amount of critique. Well, you got it, but at whose expense, yours, or the poor animal whose neck is well gorged between the jaws of what appears to be a savage. You say they are playing! Like hell they are. Have you ever heard of animal stress, because the distress that cat is being subjected to is sufficient enough to cause irreperable damage. In the UK the RSPCA (Royal Society for the Prevention Of Cruelty to Animals) would remove the animals from your ((CARE)), prosecute you , and prevent you from ever owning an animal again for the rest of your life.
Maybe it's time to create a new organisation for the likes of people like you - The Society For The Prevention Of Cruelty To Cameras. Get a life sicko and go join a forum that may get you some more positive acceptance!!!!!!!

I have a dog and cat that rough house
all the time, usually the cat ambushes the dog and they destroy half the room. LOL
Did you guys happen to notice the cats feet, totally
relaxed, as is the rest of it's body. These two are indeed
having a good time, and when they're done the cat will
delightedly groom for hours.
The photo however is badly flawed and does indeed belong
in the snapshot catagory. But to your credit these are
quick moving targets and you gotta take'm when you see'm. I
realize it's a tough proposition but next time try to bounce
the flash and concentrate on your focus.

Out of focus, bad lighting. I critique the photo and do not offer up my personal opinion on how I think anyone should handle their lives. Perhaps a faster film would help with the blurred subjects? The eye thing can be avoided by having your strobe higher up away from the lens of the camera if possible.

it appears that most people don't understand animals very well.. they must live in a bubble.. I own 4 dogs 2 ferrets and a rabbit.. and they all play together.. none ever getting hurt.. maybe I should post a shot of a 60lb Pit Bull playing with a 1/2lb bunny.... The shot is not that good (out of focus and not the most appealing composition) but it defenatly not worthy of three thumbs down for ignorance of animal behavior of the rater.. so I will do the opposite and give 3 up for having the guts to show a picture of everyday life between friends...

people are terribly attached to "nice" photos. They are shocked and full of anger when they have to look at what happens every day. Even if this dog would have accidentally killed the cat (which was not the case as they were playing) it would just have been "life": happens zillions of times every day and unfortunately not only with animals.
So nothig wrong about reminding people that the world is more than sweet stuff.
The pic itself however is not that great after all... Too blurry also...

Way out of focus and blue eye...with this said I don't believe we are supposed to be critics of content, although with that said, I do believe it is within our collective power to send a message to those who do want to corrupt such a site as this...if you don't like the content give a thumbs down w/ no critic...em the photog and explain your pov, you can not be punished for no critic :-)As for this shot I believe they are playing together the cat I feel would be limp or fighting like hell and it just doesn't appear to be either, technically a poor shot, A+ for stirring up passion in this site!

For those of you who are saying that this is play obviously don't know cats. First this is a KITTEN Probably about five months old. Secondly the cat is SCREAMING. LOOK AT HIS MOUTH! I happen to have two chihuahuas, a part G/s-mut, and 4 cats ( and a litter of two more as of this morning) and ALL my animals play. My GS never attacks my cats. when he plays he lays down on the floor to get on the cats level (as well as the chihuahua's.) If any of my dogs are aggressive its the smallest chihuahua (A whopping 3.5 lbs and all my cats are bigger then him) They all play together and never do I see fur raised. NEVER do I see an expression on my cats as I see on this. How can anyone have animals in their home and allow this kind of "Play?"
As for the picture quality, it down right stinks without the content or composition. Why on earth would you want to post such a poor quality photo to begin with. This doesn't even qualify as an artist wanna be. My 6 year old brother takes better pictures with his toy camera!
I only wish that I could give you 6 thumbs down for the bad taste and inadequate photographic skills.

This is obviously not a very good photo technically but it certainly does not deserve all the thumbs down it is getting. It is obvious to me, as a dog and a cat owner, that these two animals are playing. If the cat was being hurt or in danger it would be showing more signs of distress by holding it's paws in the air trying to kick against the dog, not just lying there. Our dog and cat do that all the time and they ARE just playing. If this photo and comment was put up just to create a reaction then it was well done.

bad photo, bad taste. even if they were playing, you didn't say that because you wanted us to see them fighting; i'm even more convinced with your "this is life" comment. if the photo was at least technically good, i could consider a thumbs up. i'd tell you to keep trying, but then you'd submit photos of child abuse, rape, and murder.

I have revisited this shot and have seen that you have indeed added photographers comments as I suggested in my original critique. Glad to know that the animals are friends but that does still not make this a good photo or excuse the way this was first presented with the misleading comments. In this form it has ceased to be offensive and I have altered my red thumbs accordingly.

You wouldnt post this if it were a person, why a cat? Oh and congrats! You have one of the worst photos on photosig! Nice job. Ive never given a triple thumbs down before. Its just a terrible picture, almost as bad as the guy that took the picture of his son with a pistol to his head. Oh and if you click "no" to the right there, you are just as bad as this guy.

2 thumbs down for being so pathetic as to photograh this rather than intervene .. 1 extra thumb down for "blue-eyeing" the dog ... the photograph is as questionable as your ethics 30/12 Im at -13 for these comments and I still stick by them 100% ..I agree with Mike Savad

Animal cruelty? They're both animals. If this is REAL, how would YOU stop it? ever try to get between a dog and what it really wants? The only way to stop it is to whack the dog... then, there would be animal cruelty.
I'll assume they are playing... the picture is out of focus, dogs eye has flash(?) yada, yada, not a good effort. These kinds of pictures aren't going to "play" well in the U.S. we're too P.C. and Mr. Disney has completely distorted America's outlook on the animal Kingdom through his movies. DIFFERENT species of animals are NOT usually buddies! Dogs and cats will not always get along.
Unless you're into shock value, this type of photo would be better left in your photo album at home.

Where I come from animal cruelty is a crime, not art.
You should not have photographed this, you should have stopped it.

PEOPLE DO NOT REACT TO THIS IMAGE BECAUSE YOU CAN CLEARLY SEE THEY ARE PLAYING.there is no fear in these animals-just an out of focus shot.

After rating one of your pictures a thumbs up, I decided to look at your portfolio to see if I could find any examples of photos you had taken that were better. I had intended to add to my earlier remarks to compare the two photos to give a better critique.
Then I came across this photo. This is the first three thumbs down I've ever given (including some pretty ranchy "erotica" I've seen here). This photo deserves it.
Technically, the photo is badly out of focus, and the dog's eye is messed up. Was this eye photoshopped?. The composition could have been better with the subjects off the center line and on of the thirds.
The subject matter of the photo is what really deserves the three thumbs down. My thoughts echo so many of the others, that I don't think I need to repeat them.

i don't think much comment is needed for this. i'm not totally fond of cats, but this is going way over the line. -2 for very bad taste -1 for out of focus and blue eye.
when this was originally posted - it had death in the title and death in the comments. there was nothing about life or playing. and as it is, these comments change every few weeks. i don't know what these things are doing. at the very least it's a -2 for technical reasons. the -3 is flawed, because of what the original title intended.

I think that maybe we should stick to the African real-life animal instincts. Seeing two domesticated animals like this is shameful. I hope you just happen to see this and then immidiately stopped it, it is not natural for the domesticated animals.

Did you think we would all applaud your "vision"? I'll give you three big green thumbs, they are obviously this important to you. You enjoy them, but they're really for the poor animal who had the misfortune, agony and suffering to come within reach of your hand. This is not a potent image of life - its a pathetic image of you.
Feel free to go rate my stuff

Heartwrenching-is that the reaction you wanted? This seems funny to you? No big deal? Why let this happen? This cat (looks like a kitten still) looks similar to mine when she was younger-if this cat is going through the hell shown here, and these are YOUR pets, you should go through the same.
This should be pulled-for the obviously inhumane content-but I guess because of "Bad Taste Photo=Art", it won't. Perhaps this photo does not qualify as "offensive, repugnant or innappropriate". If to get noticed is what you want, you will get that.
How stupid to think "...they're just playing...". Get real.

The picture is not sharp and I am not comfortable with the idea of photographing this rather than stopping it. I know that in nature animals kill each other to survive but these are domesticated animals.

bad taste all the way. if you are going to have dogs and cats in the same house hold then you should of trained your dog that the cat is family. i have dogs and cats and i had no problem teaching my shepard or my lab(a hunting dog)not to eat the cats. you don't deserve to have any animal if this is how you care for them. also as far as the picture goes it is out of focus

My cat was almost killed by a dog. This brings back bad memories. Put down the damn camera down and save the cat and kick the crap out of the dog.

Maybe instead of taking shots of this tragedy...you could have put down your camera and stopped it?
If this is your concept of art & life...I hope you someday experience this first hand.
