I do not like how the flash is caught on the berries and the leaf in the middle of the frame. The blue matting is atrocious and does nothing but bad for the final product. The bird is over sharpened. This would be 100% better if you take off that hideous blue matting. I am harsh with my critique because I honestly do not know how this photo has almost 900 thumbs up. Nice capture nonetheless... just could be loads better. Keep trying!

One of the best rated photos on the SIG, but I must say there are definately things that can be improved. It is overexposed, oversharpened, too much contrasts and has no depth. Last but not least a frame with a colour like that could scare birds away :) A bit contrast control, lower exposure and less flash could make this a beautiful 'nature'-photo. Regards, Marco.

This photo is *amazing*! The contrast in both color composition and lighting is outstanding. The physical composition, juxtaposing red berries and blue bird, with the shallow green ivy in the center, is extraordinary.

Well done Antonio. Meticulous work in preparing your photo for us. The concentration of light in the background really sets off the delicate fragility of the wren. I have tried for similar photos myself and failed--I appreciate this one. Thanks for presenting it.

Wow, this shot sure did get some attention. Well technically it's very correct, but it does looka a bit artifitial, almost like being shot in a studio and a stuffed bird. 4 flash units!!! That poor bird must have had a heart attack after being exposed to such light. Your fried the poor thing with over 20 000 K degrees!!! I think I like more natrural scenerial when shooting birds, although this shot sure is impresive. Regards

Just a note about flash... Anyone familiar with current flash technology, combined with TTL metering on today's cameras, knows that the camera adjusts the flash required by the shot automatically, dropping the output considerably when it's not needed, even when using multiple flashes. Flash technology today is based not on the total possible output of the flash, but on needed or required light. And while I do agree that the outcome does look "staged", it's certainly done by someone with the skill (and tools) to pull it off. I also prefer more "natural" light photography, but it's still a great shot!

This was obviously done by a very skilled photographer, but I don't think the desired results were achieved. I like the colors, and I like the background lighting and bokeh. However, the result of the front flashes is that the scene looks artificial, like a diorama. I realize the incredible effort it must have taken to set this up, and wildlife are difficult to photograph. I think it might have been better with reflected lighting, with it coming from high to the left of the bird.

I agree with Paul Heinrich...this is not a very good wildlife photo. You can even see the flares from the two flashes in the berry and the light falls EXTREMELY awkwardly over the leaves. Also the white on the face of the tit is very blown out as a result of the harsh lighting.
Finally The frame is just a poor choice. Inner frame is a distracting colour and the outer is much to bold resulting in an ugly distracting total frame.

Everything about this image is great, except of the way too strong key light. With so much light on the front of the foreground objects the image is given a very unnatural appearance.

EXCELENTE, una foto muy estudiada y con un gran valor artístico, aunque puede llegar a parecer un tanto irreal, me recuerda un poco aquellas fotos de aves que se hacían en estudio en los años setenta, como las que ilustran la enciclopedia de aves de tu paisano Alfredo Noval. Aun así me gusta mucho, ya quisiera yo hacer fotos así. Saludos desde León.

BRAVO! Had a blue tit eating off my hand when I was younger. that was great fun. This image brings back memories... FOUR flashes??? Quite obviously that is correct, as the image lighting is as perfect as it can be. The sharpness on your photography is superb and the composition is very well done. The red berries are a very nice touch! You have (in my humble opinion) a text book example of how to do it. Now I need to invest in some slave flashes to attempt to hopefully copy half of the expertise you have shown here.... My stuff

Espectacular. Creo que alguien dijo que la ignorancia es muy atrevida, y la sabiduría muy prudente (o si no lo dijo nadie antes me apunto el copyright :-). En serio, creo que detrás de esta extraordinaria foto hay algo más que buen arte fotográfico: hay pasión por la naturaleza, paciencia, dedicación, experiencia... Enhorabuena y gracias por compartirla.
Spectacular. I think somebody said sometime that ignorance is very daring and wisdom very prudent (if nobody did then I claim for the copyright here :-). Seriously, I think that there is a lot more than good photographic art behind this extraordinary photo: there is passion for nature; there is patience, devotion, experience... absolutely beautiful. I do agree that the flashes are a bit strong, but overall a very impressive shot. How did you manage to use this massive setup on a bird? The colors are so vivid one could think they have been enhanced in PS. In a way the frame color suits that of the bird, but a simple black would bring out the image more, drawing less attention to the frame. All comments on my nature photos highly appreciated.

Excellent image that deserves a place on the main page (although you should probably lose the frame!). Maybe try with slightly softer lighting next time, but still worth 3 because of the composition and sharpness (and for the difficulty of getting shots like this). Congrats.

Thomas Rauers, how can you be so ignorant? There is something called "hides" and one can prepeare it all when you know that the bird will stop there to drink, or eat, or it is one of its places to stop. You've got a really bad eye saying that there are a transition between two images. Nothing so far from reality. I know this photo. I've seen it before. I know other Antonio's photos. I've seen them in books, in his web, in www.fotonatura.org. And he doesn't work the way you describe.
Antonio, this photo is all a success here, as it was in fotonatura. Congratulations for it!!

IMHO, lighting is too strong. I'd soften it by using reflector or bouncing sheet. Great composition and colors though. Regards.

Antonio - Excellent Avian Image! The composition is lovely, colors are gorgeous, pose and position of the bird fits well in the composition, good sense of the habitat and environment. I think the blue in the frame competes with the color of the bird, but It's such an outstanding image I could hardly mark down for that. Very Well Done!

Exceptional! There is no evidence of the twin shadows on the front, so the second flash must have been aimed solely at the bird, which is coroborated by the twin spots in the eye. The two red berries nicely complement the blue head and tail here. Great use of colour. Cheers, Reggie.

I would know the same than Jean-Noël : how do you have done with the flashs without frightning the bird... Or did you have put the flashs in the good place before the bird used to come in the same place ? Even a very good shot with good managment of the lightning and a nice compo with the background and the vegetable...and of course the bird ! Best regards Patrik

This is a great shot. Well composed..good colors etc..even the bird has expression. It is a 3TU for sure. My only issue is the strength of the light/flash. It is very strong and detracts from the natural qualities of the picture. Try a softer lighting approach. It is a VERY GOOD bird shot

Obviously a tremendous amount of work went into this shot in setting up the location and lighting and having the patience to wait for the bird,if you had got a Robin it would have been perfect,not sure about the colour of the frame but still a very fine shot

Wonderful! Maybe the best bird photo I've seen here. But how did you do to install 4 flashes without frightening the bird? The only thing to reproach would be the flash relect on bacground parts.

Great colors and composition! The bird looks calm here, but I imagine he flew like ... after all those flashes! This is really an incredible shot.
