This photo is Amazing... It gives the feeling that the rock has some power & influence over its surroundings, pulling clouds and sea waves towered it. But in reality, the rock's power extended beyond its surroundings and pulled our eyes and harts to it. Just look at it; it is Amazing...

I find it unbelievably beautiful image. I think having the rock in the middle is a good solution, although the picture might seem static then. But it is not static because of the clouds that seem to flow towards the middle into the distance. Anyway, it gives the impression of overwhelming calmness, which is very pleasant. ...If something of what I write does not make sense, sorry then, English language is not my mother-tongue.

The central positioning of the rock is unusual and breaks the rule of thirds. However the rules can be broken if the results work, and I think in this case they do. It works because the perspective effect of the clouds draws the eye to the centre of the picture. It is a stunning scene. There are no technical issues to distract from the enjoyment.

Too centered, too symetrical, too much like a textbook study in perspective. A wonderful place to be and a great effect however different angle, time of day, lens use, etc. could have framed a neat island in a less conventional manner, ie. mists forming off the water, early or late day, as it stands the high contrasts remind me of PS with the AUTOEXPOSURE cranked way up. I would have looked for some different ways to frame the island, even adding the boat or a something off set in the foreground on the water using rule of 1/3s. Potentially this could be a great night shot using moonlight or grainy exposure. The photo is a real eye-catcher and in that regard achieves that effect but once you see it there is no incentive for me to come back to it and enjoy it again and again as other photos posted here draw you into them and you go back again several times.

Whilst thos iss one of my personal favourite sshots on here I beleive that this is equally a valid critique whether one agrees withthe views or not, they are well constructed well written and this is all an art not a science. In my opinion this shouldn't have been marked down as unhelpful.

Hi John,
While I agree with some of what you are saying, I find it difficuld to see how this picture can be classed as "uninteresting" with a 1TD. There may be the possibility of a good nightime shot, as you suggest, but that dosn't mean yuo can't also get a great sunrise shot, as we have here.

After viewing your images I do not understand how you can rate this image so poorly. You critiques are valid, howevever, I don't see that you apply the same standards to your own work. This image may be a 1 or a 2 TU but certainly not a TD. I think you're being a bit unfair, I can understand, the critiqaue, not the rating.

"I can understand, the critique, not the rating."
In that case you should have marked the critique helpful, as you're supposed to judge the critique, not the rating (read the TOS)
Also, his own images have nothing what so ever to do with his critiques and ratings of other images.

Sorry, that wasn't me (the photog) answering you, that was another poster. I find it interesting that opinion is pretty evenly split on whether the bird is a plus or a minus. I have the same shot with and without the bird, and I thought about cloning the bird out in this one, but in the end left it. It works better hi-res, where you can see that it is a bird. I am still undecided which way is better.

I like very much the depth of your picture! Lot of people love clean sky, but it has a big defect: it gives now depth to the pictures! Here even if the pictures is static, the clouds help adding depth and a sense of motion, while the rock in the middle give a strong sense of staticity (does it exist in english?!). You have a sort of meta contrast here :P Btw it's a pitty that the reflection is a bit cropped!

so.. i'm really not shure... this sky is really strange.. even though i know that nature has power to make magic and incredible things..
so .. i've searched web a bit.. and i couldn't find anything similar ..

rock-texture is definitely ok,real... but that's really not a problem with 3d
software..
so.. i've decided for 1 thumb down.. most because this 'photo' confuses me so much.. and.. yes.. it's technically perfect .. and really nice... but a bit boring for me..

Great! It must be good if it causes such a reaction, and this is not the first time it has been accused of being a digital creation. I've posted some other views of the rock for that reason, and now, seeing as how so many people are convinced that it is CG, I've just posted a composite of some parts of the original scan at full 4000 ppi so that they can see that it is indeed from film: see "the rock: detail" in my portfolio.

Again another red TD from someone who does not seem to apply the same standards to their work. Although it may seem boring to you, it most certainly is not a TD, especially since you find it "technically perfect ... and really nice" I'd say your just going against the grain.

They say the best time to shoot skies are in the early in am or late pm due to chemical balances and I think you hit the mark on proving some of that theory. This is a beautiful image. Those clouds are outstanding. It is as though the photographer has purposely lined them up in that way to help make the shot have more impact. As we know that is not possible, but to capture this scene is wonderful. If I had had the chance of an image like this I would have ensured that the reflection of the rock was all visible, because I think that the rock AND it's reflection would add impact. But those clouds are wonderful. They look like a fan across the sky.

I had the hard choice of including the entire reflection at the expense of the sky or vice-versa, and just on the basis of gut feeling chose the latter. I wish now I had framed at least one shot a bit lower, but I was just going on instinct and putting the rock higher in the frame didn't seem right. Toby

This picture fills me with joy. Clarity is the clearest in its class. The sharposity is as sharp as it was first sharpened almost three years ago (move over Ginzu knife!). The central composition is a work of genius, simple and unassuming. Colors give me emotional kick; some say, "There are no colors like this in nature. It's fake!" I say, "Give him a break! It's your own fault if you never saw such colors in real life! Get out, travel, live your life!"

Fake=offensive
Bad Fake because the light on the clouds doesn't match the light on the rock. Because were are told that it is in the galapagos, which are deep ocean, but there are no waves. Because the blue is not the right color of blue. Because the rock is dead center, and doesn't follow the rule of thirds. Because the rock is confused about how big it is. Because of that distracting clearing in the clouds lower right.

Hahahaha. That's a good one...
Whew....let me catch my breath....
Yes I have heard of a polarizer. The effect of a polarizer in the sky is to remove glare (and hence darken) the part of the sky which is at 90 degrees angle to the sun. The shadowing on the rock is a little bit botched so it is hard to tell what solar angle this digital artist was trying to recreate, but since it is clearly supposed to be wide angle (because of the convergence of the clouds) there should be a difference between the left and right sides of the sky. This effect exists to a lesser degree even when there isn't a polarizer on due to variations in the reflection off water vapor in the air. Don't believe it? Take a look at the Photo "Cranes" in your own portfolio. The blue portion of the sky is slightly darker on the left side of the shot. A polarizer would amplify that effect tremendously. Here is a sample (not mine):
Once you get a polarizer you can experiment with this effect on your own, instead of building a false idea of what the filter does based on a fake. (Such as this one.)

OK, I guess it is time to post a blowup of part of the image so that you can see that it is exactly as shot--see "the rock: detail" in my portfolio. Actually I did use a polarizer. This was taken on a diving trip to the Galapagos--there is plenty of shallow water around the islands, and even so you must never have been on the open sea if you think that there is never a glassy ocean there. How can a rock be confused? The photographer never said the image was a straight shot or photoshopped, either way, what difference does it make. It's the image, the end result that matters. This may not be your cup of tea, but it's not a 1TD either.

this critique has absolutely nothing to do with the whole 'ooo is it fake?' 'no, its real, look there's a bird...' here's the thing... this photograph, real or fake, is incredibly boring. i can only give it one thumb down because i am so absolutely indifferent to this piece. but i feel like i want to comment on it because everyone else is doing it. it doesn't really tell much of a story... it's a big rock against a beautiful blue sky. it doesn't demonstrate any ingenuity, any insight into the artist or the world; the positioning is very symmetrical. simply put, it is pretty, but it is that kind of sterile pretty that is the background for an advertisement above a urinal. this is not art, and it certainly isn't an intersting photograph. my suggestion, find something that hasn't been done, i.e., something that isn't banal representation.

From seancoughlin/Sean (57)

depends on what you mean 'whether or not it's good is merely an opinion'. If by this you mean my opinion is worthless, fine, i agree. if you mean that what makes 'good' art or 'bad' art is opinions, then i disagree. there are, i'm sure, a wide variety of criteria for good 'art' and bad 'art' (and the technical criteria implicit in people's critiques on this site are rather consistent and appropriate, whereas the compositional criteria are quite dull, suburban and old-fashioned), but i'd hardly say it is just 'opinion'. I find it very peculiar that people on this site will rate your critique badly if you don't agree with them. frankly, it's quite childish (just order the critiques by least helpful, notice that all the red thumbs - all 7 - are in the top 10 with only 3 green ones interspersed...). The picture is _nice_ but, the framing around it (black border) sucks, the bird in the centre left is annoying and the rock/clouds aren't sharp enough. i mean, it's a nice picture. but, it can still be critiqued without the threat of retribution by a bunch of hacks. for f***'s sake, people who wrote 'wow!' got better critique ratings than anyone who voted down. that's insane!

I am giving this a thumbs down because this image has been really doctored without admittance. A previous comment had a good point; it is impossible to have an expanding reflection given the position camera level relative to the subject. Also, the line between the artificial sky is descernable from the real sky near the horizon. There is no indication of the broken cloud cover in the reflection of the water. Also the lighting on the rock doesn't quite correlate to the brightness of the sky. I can't see the rock's shadow on the water. Basically, I can't even tell which parts of this image are real (or if any are); which, given this is supposed to be a photograph, I find very bothersome. It's even more bothersome that this is the second highest rated photo on photosig. I would have given this one thumbs up with the image weren't so cliche in addition to being what I've previously said.

The blue hues are fantastic. Once in a lifetime photo, this is - can't imagine getting the clouds to radiate from the island again. Even the ripple on the ocean radiates from the camera. I do believe the bird spoils it though. Would be perfect - three thumbs even - without the bird. Fantastic anyway.

I'm not going to buy into the debate of whether this is a manipulated image, just take it on face value.
From my point of view it is spectacular though would have been better if the image could have been less symetrical--that is to crop the photo so that the central point of focus was slightly offset to one side. Obviously, you couldn't take it that way of the wide-angle vanishing-point of the horizon would not be the same.
Overall a very striking photograph.

I have to say good work on this photo. I hear a lot of critiques about this being manipulated. 95% of everyone who submits a photo does a little manipulation to their pics, whether it be adding xtra blue to the sky or removing objects that were there naturally. Oh by the way these clouds look like altocumulus or cirrocumulus clouds, these clouds look to be about 25000 ft. high.

Hey, great joke dude!
I am a 3d expert and you really did a bad job at your simulation Mr."Photographer". I never saw an expanding reflexion before in my life! I also recognize the sea texture as being a texture or some other digitally created feature.
Then there is the problem with the sky. The sky is still in focus even when its hundreds of miles away, there should be some haze from the moisture in the sky (especially over the ocean!!!)
In short; it's not a photo at all, its a CGI (COMPUTER GENERATED IMAGE!!!) rendered picture.

What the heck, everyone is weighing in, so I might as well too. Recently, there is an ever-growing contingent here that believes this is manipulated photo. Strong opinions have been generated in both directions recently, with the individual ratings reflecting as much also. Likewise, I will assume this as a manipulated photo too and treat it as such. Nevertheless, I will score the photo on its merits... based on my opinion, of course. Even if this was a manipulated photo, it is still not a bad photo. But there are many other pictures that convey mood better to me. It is an vaguely interesting picture of a rock... with good sky highlights and it is well-cropped. Ultimately, there is little in this photo that weighs to creativity in comparison with other, more striking photos I have seen. As a sidebar, it is interesting to note the author's comments in some of his other photos about the use of manipulation. It strikes me that I can find no commentary at the top of this page denying manipulation here. By the same token, it is the photographer's right to present his or her work "as is" and let the public judge for itself the merits of the work, as it is presented. I think it is a good right to have for artistic purposes.
I will mark it as a good work... possible manipulation detracts a little bit for me personally... just can't rate this three thumbs in either direction, however.

The shot seems splendid at first looking, this is why many people intret to give 3 thumbs to this photograph. but it is strange that what heppened by the clouds in sky. there is some harsh and brushes effect in the depth, it seems that it isn't natural. or it is better to say that the clouds don't belong to this location. and what more strange that in this atmospher and this full cloudy day there isn't any reflections of these clouds on the water!!! composition is avrage with the puting the rock in center point.

"Offensive or Repugnant"? You gotta be kidding me. Check the rest of his portfolio, too. If the clouds were faked, as you seem to imply, he sure went through lots of trouble to do it in all his shots from there, and with a different fake sky for each one.
You really might want to change your three thumb rating. It's reserved for very extreme cases, and I can see no way that this photo meets any imaginable criteria that would warrant a 3TD rating.

Really nice photo... would have given 3TU but for 1 issue: I think the composition would have been stronger if we could see the entire reflection of the rock. Other wise I love it. The narrow chromatic range with the wide tonal range works well. Excellent contrast between sky and cloud. The pic is very abstract... reminds me stongly of a Lawren Harris painting (you would probably love his stuff... check it out online). Many have complained that it is too "photoshoped" but I don't think so. Perhaps a bit oversaturated, but it works with an abstract piece. Nice work.

Well, it looks great. However, here is the time Toby to admit what you did here. The only "true" part is the rock, but nothing else. If you folks don't believe me check it out yourselves: http://www.planetside.co.uk/terragen
You can download the free program which will generate the same effects (sky and reflection) you just have to add a rock to it and that's it. Give a try, it's an excellent applied graphics tool. Not photography. You could have done a better job with setting the reflection (I mean more realistic - can't be wider than the object itself). That's why I give you 1TD.

First off let me just say that this image is very pretty. I like the nice colours, and the pretty composition.
But where is the creativity?
Where is the meaning?
Where is the unique characteristic that makes this photo stand out from the rest?
I'm not sure if the guys that have accused you of using Photoshop are right, but if oyu did: Shame on you! Not for using PS, but just for not making a better composition!
This photo reminds me of Godwin's photo of a wall, and a sinister looking cloud formation. But what makes her photo great, and yours not; is the fact that there is not much going on in this photo. I do not want explosions, and car chases! But this photo is just... Uninspired, and flat.

That is mean spirted. It's offensive to me that the administrators have not erased this critique. Looking inward to yourself and try to understand you motives.

This is no doubt, photoshop work and having taken a look at some of your other work i can see that editing art is where your passion realy resides. I think you would benefit terribly ny learning real photography and so wouldnt fall in the errors that in this shot reveal its true nature. Only when one knows how light works, how it is going to influence the shot and how to expose for it, only then can one understand how everything in the shot works toguether in terms of highlights, shadows, natural light and depth of field. When you understand all this, you will be able to see that your rock's shadow could not possibly be cast like that because of the light configuration on the rock and sky light.
I am giving you a negative review on this one because i believe that this kind of work should be presented at artsig and not here nevertheless, you are clearly on a good start towards good photography and superv editing.

People... wake up. It's a computer generated image.
1) The sky is not reflected on the water.
2) Such scatered clouds means there is wind. Yet, the sea is incredibly flat.
3) There is a 1 pixel change from landmass to water.
4) The contour of the rock is too sharp.
5) There is not a single trace of vegetation on that rock. Either there would be vegetation or mold.
6) And if it really was a rock, in the middle of the ocean, it'd be crowded with birds.
I could go on forever. Face it, it's a computer generated image. :)

You forgot the killer!
If you notice the rock, it is being lit directly by a soft light sugesting direct sunlight ilumination. This is clear and there is no contest about it, you can see that irregularities on the rock are shadowed thus proving that it was bweing directly iluminated from the right as the left is in shadow.
Now, i never saw a shadow being cast in water towards the sun!!! It usualy is cast in the shadow area and if that rock was real and that shadow were real then the sun would be on the other side of the rock and it would be totaly shadowed...
Oh and notice the blue remains of the collage remaining between the rock and the water on the bottom.

I love rocks, but this is the most impressive rock I've ever seen. If you see through your almost closed eyelashes, the clouds are more dramatique and you can see more forms in the clouds. The bird, the land at the right site, the sharpness, everything is amazing. We know, on the Galapagos lives more than a million birds and you shoot only one at thousand miles, unbelievable. Good work.

Un freaking real! Overwhelming shot. Makes one feels the large spaces involved. Color, contrast, ect are all great. Wonder what would happen to the composition with a full refelction of the island and not cropped. Flawless if you take the bird out of the picture!

I like the colors, contrast, and composition. Unlike a few others, I think the bird is almost critical -- giving the stone a measuring stick -- how else are we supposed to know the size?
My eye does not automatically flee to the bird.

the picture is what the title says. a rock; except for the bird which detracts attention from the rock.
the sky and water came out very nicely and disappear into a horizon that is almost in line with the bottom of the rock, making it appear like the rock is 'sitting' on the water or horizon.
i dont know about the rock being smack in the middle, maybe viewing the rock a little more to the left would have been better, but i dont know the surroundings, there may have been another rock on that side.
i like the vastness of the ocean, with the rock being the only thing in sight [with exception to the bird] the reflection of the rock is good too; it makes the substance look a little bigger by leading the reflection off the shot, and again a little more focused on the rock.

Wow, it is a beautiful picture, the rock is good in the centre. Only piece of critique i have is the shadow of the rock, because a piece of reflection in the water is missing. The clouds are exciting, it gives the feeling that the rock is coming to you. Especially the bird you see is a plus. It gives it more demention.

Those dynamic clouds look as if they are flying out of that magnificent rock. And rock seems as gigantic magnet pulling the viewer into it. Thus by looking at this photo I feel pulled & re-pulled at the same time. :) In short, this photo provides one great mood! Best sky shot I've ever seen. Bravo!

I have only one criticism of this excellent picture... I would suggest that the reflection of the island in the water should have also been in the shot. Three ways of achieving this would have been to use 1. A wider angle lens, 2. Getting further away from the subject, or 3. Using a different point of view (closer to the water or cropping the sky).
Perhaps you had included the reflection but have cropped it out. I would be interested in seeing the picture with the reflection complete if this is the case. But all in all, you have been very fortunate to be able to have had all the right lighting + weather conditions to make this shot happen.

A fantastically composed image, but unfortunatly, your "border" is uneven! or the cropping is not square? or if the image is rotated to produce a square border, then your horizon will not be level.

Astounding photograph. A lot of interplay between the clouds and the rock; the clouds seem to actually emanate from the rock, like radio waves. The immensity of the sky and the water heighten the power of the solitary rock. The colors, the textures, everything is flawless. Proof that in simplicity lies power.

It's not really uninspired and uninteresting, but has some flaws. It needs to be sharper. The seagull spoils the symmetry. Finally, it just doesn't deserve the astronomically high rating it's got.

This is beautiful! While the color is wonderful, I would love to see this printed in black and white on fiber paper. I know it would be fantastic - but, I love black and white. The rock centered is the only way this would look so great, otherwise the impact of the clouds seeming to radiate outward from the rock is lost. Great job - congratulations.

In a word, Excellent. While it may seem obvious now that we are looking at it, it was a good job of visualizing the shot and frame it the way you did. Shooting 20mm successfully takes some thought. Very nice.

excellent detail and sky but be careful with black bends due to the scan, crop it and it'll be perfect!

There is nothing to add! All have said. I just dont agree in some critics that the bird add to the picture. I believe the bird distracts my vision. 4TU!!
