In memoriam of the thousands Frenchman that lost their lives trying to build the Panama Canal, trying to go as a straight line. Eventually they quit, and the Americans took over, having the better idea of climbing up and down the mountains using locks.

From the Neglected Photos Page -- very nice B&W exposure and subject is well composed EXCEPT for the pole down the middle. Not much you can do about that... but there it is.
