Your choice to present this in black and white was well thought out, IMHO. The magnolia is not pure white and often looks yellowish or greenish because the white flower often reflects the dark green of the leaves. In B &W the flower looks pure white. Your DOF is good as the whole flower is in focus. It would be nice to see a little more texture in the petals but you don't want to over sharpen it. A very nice image.

Thanks so much, Donald. It's not often that I would consider converting a flower to B&W. Gererally, it's like converting fireworks, sunsets and autumm scenes...which makes no sense. Since I find the true color of most magnolia blossoms a little dull and uninteresting, I toyed with the idea of B&W. I liked what I saw, and felt in this case it was an enhancement to the image. You're right about the texture. I later tried decreasing the highlights, and that brought out more of the texture. Thanks again for your critique and encouraging words.

With few exception and some special effect, there is really not that much reason to do flowers in B&W, which in no way could compete with the brilliant color of the flower and the leaves in viewer's mind.
You have handle the white very nicely in this picture. But the leaves come across too black. There is not enough of the tonal range in this picture.

Thanks for your critique, Alex. Please read my reply to Donald's critique, and you may understand my choice to convert this one to B&W. As far as the tonal range, it seems to look fine on my monitor. But that may be a matter of opinion.

Nice shot of the magnolia Richard. While I usually favor color for flowers in this cas the B&W works well. The focus and DOF are both good. The petals do have some texture and maybe you can bring a little more out by enhancing highlights or contrast. Nick
