My husband is a professional photographer. Yesterday he gave me one of his older cameras to "play" with. Today was my second day shooting with an SLR camera. Looking forward to learning more and getting better at this!!! *I have never taken photos for myself.. Not even with a basic point and shoot. While he has encouraged me to at least try and learn more about his passion, he has never pushed me. Yesterday was my first official day and I am beyond addicted!

Hi Nicole. Welcome to photoSIG, and the world of photography as well. You will soon find out it is fascinating, and once you grab the taste, it becomes an addiction. Your model is really beautiful, I love her pose and expression on her face. I like the composition, without being centered, with the baby aside. What I would correct a little is the exposure (those white areas with little detail) I recommend you use photoshop or some other photo editor. To be one of your first pictures, it has been pretty good. Congratulations! Rosario.

Thank you for your kind words and critique. The photo actually was exposed properly, I just chose this look for the finished product as I really like this style. If there is one thing that my husband has taught me, it is that photography is an art and the beauty is in the eye of the artist (photographer). Perhaps I'm wrong about this site and this is for technically "perfect" photos... Will I continue to be frowned upon if I modify my photos to this extent? Thank you again for your kind comments.

Nicole, this site is in no way only for technically "perfect" photos. If it was that, then I don't think there would be that many members posting pictures.

We are here to learn. Well, at least I am. This comes, obviously, from all the feedback we get from our fellow members whether they are professionals, enthusiasts or just plain newbies. We grow from the insight of our viewers and, from that, learn what works or doesn't.

No, you will not be frowned upon and the thumbs (and you did get some positive ones) are a only a reflection of what we think of the photograph and not of your abilities or end result preferences.

I do, however, question whether an overblown image is of aesthetic value in anyone's view? A high contrast image does work for me but in this particular instance the brightness, and lack of detail where it is most apparent, totally detracts from the positive aspects of the picture.

Welcome to Photosig, Nicole, and, yes, this venture can really be addictive specially as you develop your "photographer's eye".

With regards to the image. The exposure is very bright causing harsh areas on the little girl which, turn, diminish from the overall quality of the image. Her back, in this instance, has almost totally disappeared. Focus, though, is good specially on her beautiful blue eyes and you did follow one of the important factors in shooting children and/or pets....you got down to eye level with her.

Lastly, with regards post processing, the inclusion of the vignette on the edges takes focus away from your subject rather than drawing the viewer to it.

Hope you enjoy your journey on Photosig and we look forward to your further submissions and your critiques on other members' submissions. Cheers, Rick.

Rick. I strongly disagree with your statement of the vignette drawing attention away from the subject. I thought this was the whole intention of using a vignette, was to draw the eyes into the photo. This is what it does for me.

You are correct, Doug. I should have said that the vignetting in this case draws too much attention to the detracting factors of the subject. Cheers, Rick.
