It is only your nice idea and composition that gather this 1TU. In fact, this photo is a fail. You should try to manage a shot where lamp post light is not blown out and intensity of the red fence is kept equal either by equal lighting or by cutting the dark part off.
Actually, the worst problem here is the dull black sky which has no appeal for spectators. You should definitely try to capture the very same frame but while sky is still blue; or event to try to capture the period immediately after the sunset, when layers of colors still exist at the sky (providing this side is anywhere within 120° angle with sun in the middle). But whatever choice you make, you should definitely try to keep that light from burning the white hole from the scenery.

Hi Roxxie!
First of all lamp is intentionally blown out in highlights. Original shot was dark enough to extract enough shadows for the bottom and keep lamp properly exposes. I've actually selected lamp out in Photoshop and leveled up highlights. Same with darkness behind. It had few dots of a city behind it and I've cloned them out.
As I've explained to Randall below, this photo isn't about very clear idea behind it. Adding/removing anything, shooting during dusk or sunrise, etc. - it would be very different idea behind the photo. Perhaps someday I'll return there and do something different, but this time around I wanted to keep bright light and dead black shadows. Especially disappearing rail on the left.
Why? Not sure. It was just an idea. And given I have to explain the idea for the second time - indeed it's a fail. Photo should not be generally explained to a viewer :)
Thanks for confirming by concerns!

Hi letuchka,
Technically shots like this are tough. I always find it challenging to balance the light and the surrounding details just right and I think you did very good in that regard here. The elements are simple, clear and good details hence the two thumbs.
This is also one of those shots that can tell a story and that's where the questions start. Are you trying to portray the emptiness away from the light or are you trying to portray the attraction to the light? The elements are there to push the viewer into seeing what you want (change of angle(?), portait vs landscape (?), use the rail for leading line(?)your the artist you decide).
It's a nice contemplative shot...I just have a feeling you can say more with it.

Very fair and great critique. You've pretty much nailed it with "What is the purpose? What does it say? Maybe too much freedom?". That's how it got into my camera. During night landscape shooting I've walked near lamp pole and it caught my eye. Is it about light? Is it about darkness? Both? Maybe nothing. To me it's just a bit of geometry, light and tad of color. And some night mood. Can't really say. I get such photos a lot, but do not post them as I'm not too sure what are they about. This time I gave it a shot as I wanted to hear opinion. Would anyone find anything in them but me?
So your comment is a bullseye. You've raised a question and answered at the same time. There is something there, but it's elusive and thus questionable. I guess some photos are just "Hmm? Oookay!".
Thanks a lot Randall!

LOL...yes we all have those shots that are the "hmmm...ok?!' type shots. I honestly think you can make a great statement with this scene and hope you go back and play with it. I'd love to see what you come up with.

I like the way this photo is framed but I think there is just too much blank/black space. I think it needs something to add interest.
