Oh man these birds are soooo hard to get good photos of. I have been trying to get even some decent shots of these guys for a while now and so far have not been able to. They always see me long before I see them and they don't care much for people. I think if I'm ever going to be successful I am going to need to set up a blind. Any ways great shot. Where abouts are you doing most of your bird photography? I live in Solvang just north of Santa Barbara and shoot much of the same birds that you do so I figure you must be pretty close by.

Thanks for the critique Aaron. I'm not too far away. I mostly photograph birds at the San Elijo Lagoon in north San Diego County, which is a bird conservatory on the Pacific Flyway. This shot was taken where I mostly photograph flowers, a botanical gardens in the same area. This guy likes to hang out at the lily pond there and dine on the tiny fish that inhabit it. He was patient enough this time to wait for me to even go back to the car and swap out my macro lens for the telephoto. Nick

Nicholas, I totally agree with Elise. You captured the bird in an excellent moment giving the feeling it is about to spring on its prey. IMO cropping the bottom part of the rock at the waterline results in a more balanced image. Thanks for sharing. -G

Whatever may be technically awry in this photo (and I'm not sure that anything is) I'm so transfixed on the bird that it's not noticeable enough to stop me from giving this 3TU. Your subject's predatory stance is so beautifully captured that it makes me feel as though I'm there, watching it, holding my breath and feeling tense, waiting for its next move. It's brought it alive for me.
