I like the concept and you managed a funny expression of the dog but yes, taking a few steps back would probably make it to look at you, putting his head out of the door. A different concept, I agree, but may improve the picture.

hi Chris, The little doggie baring its teeth while peeking out of the hole in the door is adorable and makes me smile. :) The dog looks somewhat underexposed though, and I'd suggest selectively brightening him up in post.
I'm not sure about the color balance. Was the concrete on the building white or gray? If looks like a very pale shade of lavender.
The off-center placement of the subject is the strength of your composition; the little white thing in the lower right edge is distracting, as is the debris on the grass.
Shooting from a straight-on position would have made for a stronger composition. Something about how it's shot at this angle makes the composition feel a bit unbalanced. Shooting straight on would enhance the geometrics; however, perhaps this was a spur-of-the-moment shot where you only had seconds to frame the photo before snapping?
It's a cute picture for sure. :) Cheers! sheila

Really like this idea. I wonder if taking a few steps back to show more of the door would improve this? Showing the cute little dog peering out of the larger door could create more impact.
