Photo
I came across this found object on a recent walk and was intrigued by its striking colours on a background that was almost monochrome. After trying a few alternate compositions, I settled on this one, which I found an interesting challenge because of the numerous shapes & lines in the object.
The most striking characteristic to me, though, is the subject's color, and that has caused me quite a few headaches when printing it or preparing this for on-screen presentation. Both the oranges and the blues as captured by the K5's sensor are out of gamut both on my screens and on my printer. I used this as a test image to try out Lightroom 4's softproofing, but that didn't change the fact that I would like to present much more saturated dark blues and fluorescent orange, which I couldn't get to work even on a good display.
By the way, no selective desaturation was applied to this image, the changes I made were mostly about contrast and global saturation control.

I like unconventional and uncommon subjects. The close up works well and the framing space is good in general. BTW: The colors look fine on a new iPad (3). I assume that it a soccer ball that has seen its last game. Thanks for sharing. Bill

Thanks for your feedback. It also looks ok on my Nook Color's IPS panel and my old Eizo's PVA, but sRGB still can't show the saturated, dark blue and orange that the cam saw (set to Adobe RGB). Interesting.

Great work! Love the colours and subject. Initially it seemed you had desaturated the grass to monochrome... Regards.

Rod, thanks for the the thumbs up. Hope it doesn't look so artificial to be distracting, shopped or not.

Hi Sven The thumbnail immediately caught my eye, and the photo itself did not disappoint. I often like selectively desaturated photos, and was interested in your explanations and the fact that this was not one. I think it was well worth your work and like the off-centre composition that allows for the contrast between the subject and the BG to be appreciated. Good sharpness and exposure. Well seen. Regards. Steve

Thanks Steve! The Pentax SMC K28/3.5 lens is wonderfully sharp & contrasty especially around f5.6-f8 if handled correctly. My favourite one, even at close range like in this case. At 42mm-e on APS-C, fov is very versatile, and I often take it with me as the only lens.
