f:20, 1/2 sec. Shot near the center of Jyvaskyla, so I could have chosen urban as well...

Thumb-up    from darylk/Daryl (921) Send mail to this user on January 8, 2012 2:10:19 PM CST (1) Early critique

Hello Jarmo. Yours is not a bad effort, but I think there is significant room for improvement. First off, there appears to be an unnatural blue tint to the photo, particularly noticeable when viewing the water. I think the white balance is a little off. The bright foliage in the upper left of your photo is distracting and draws attention away from the water. If you have post processing software that has graduated filter capability, I suggest using it to darken that area to better complement the lighting of the rest of the scene. The composition suffers because of foliage blocking the background waterfall. I don't know if you could find a different vantage point to avoid this or not. Also, the elevated perspective (were you shooting from a bridge?) gives the sense of being disconnected from the scene. I would suggest that next time you try to get lower and closer to the water with a wider angle lens and use one of the large rocks/boulders as an anchorage point in the foreground, the first small waterfall as a midpoint of your view and the taller waterfall as the background. Finally, I suggest that the next time you submit a photo, you make it larger(more pixels) to allow closer/better inspection. I look forward to seeing more of your work. Thanks, Daryl

Thank you Daryl, that was a very thorough and useful critique! I was quite disappointed to see the quality of this small scale version myself, tried to make it as large as I could but... also, it doesn't appear as blue in the original, but I completely agree with your comment regarding this one. Thanks again!
