Photo
Was at location in Brooklyn to capture images of fireworks. After the show ended, noticed this composition, quite a distance away, but couldn't resist.
Taken August 4, 2011.
The U.S. Coast Guard training ship, the Eagle, was passing by the Statue of Liberty.
Canon 70-200 IS L lens with 1.4T/C.
I am aware of some technical issues, but thought this was an interesting image.

Karl: Striking moon color in good position above Liberty. Tough shot to make, to expose for the moon without blowing out Liberty's white. But, for me, the Coast Guard ship distracts, one too many elements. Maybe it would be stronger, after the ship passes by? But then, is that Governor's Island lights behind the ship? I've been trying, with less success than you, to line up the moon behind my local fishing pier. Good luck on more like this.

Hi Eric and welcome to PhotoSig. I shot this from Brooklyn Bridge Park, quite a long distance from the Statue. I was there to shoot fireworks that night and as the night progressed, and the show ended, I noted this composition. The ship is a distraction, but I felt if you could actually see it there would be a bit of a patriotic aspect. As mentioned in earlier response, I may try to post some of the images which were brighter and the ship can be more readily visualized.
That is not Governer's Island, but rather I believe those lights are coming from Ellis Island or New Jersey. Thanks again.

Well seen! An interesting image even with the general softness. I would recommend cropping off two thirds of the foreground water and about half of the sky above the moon. I think this would improve the composition greatly. Also I'd clone out that streak on the left.
Cheers, Don

This is a very tight crop already so I was reluctant to go any further, but perhaps I will try out your suggestions. Thanks for the input.

an interesting and dramatic combination of elements, Karl. I can see why you couldn't resist the shot. I'm guessing you had to crop it a whole lot and sadly the sharpness is quite lacking, though you've controlled the noise well. Probably some ship and moon movement during the exposure didn't help either. If the hull of the ship could be brought out more that would be good. I think you could crop the bottom and a little off the top as well to turn it ino a squarish landcape format. I'd also clone out the light streak near the left border.

Thanks for having a look and the comment. This is a very tight crop as I was quite a distance from the Statue. Couldn't quite get the moon or the ship to remain still which explains the lack of sharpness. I usually don't post images which are of this quality, but I liked the overall composition. I do have some with the sailboat somewhat more exposed (thats how I knew what ship it was...saw the Coast Guard strip on the bow and knew it was sailing around NY Harbor that evening)
