This is between a one and a half thumbs up and a two. Think the weeds in the foreground add to the photo. Might try to darken the photo just a tad. The problems are minor. The subjects shouldn't have been dressed it white, given the time of day. The squinting is a problem, but I still see eyes. The subject positioning is not too bad, but I would have put the young fellow in the middle to create an angle. Expressions are good. You are on your way.

hi Anamarie, Everyone has such beautiful smiles, and their happy expressions make me smile. :)

Color balance looks fine, but grandma's shirt and the girl's shirt on the right looks a little bit overexposed, but it's nothing that I find distracting.

The way grandma's shirt is different while all three of the grandkids' shirts are different looks just fine to me since all the kids' shirts are the same. I think showing grandma in slightly different attire works fine since she's the only adult there and the others are kids.

The foreground and background flowers are so pretty and adds to the happy mood evident by everyone's expressions; however, a shallower DOF to blur the flowers behind everyone would improve the image some.

The dark wooded area in the upper left quadrant really adds a heavy visual element to the image that pulls my eyes away from the subject. Since it's so dark, it also weighs the image down some in terms of the mood of the image. The bright flowers and happy expressions make this image have a lighthearted, fun, and relaxed mood to it. The dark area in the background does make a visual contrast; however, it adds a tense and edgy element and is very distracting. Have you consider trying to crop some off the top?

I think you did a good job overall, especially considering you shot this under harsh lighting conditions. Did you use fill flash or a reflector? Cheers! sheila

Soft box actually. What I needed is a ladder to stand on which would eliminate the dark background.

a nice scene. a couple suggestions:

a wider looser crop

i would use a diffuser on the left side where the light is coming in to soften the light from the sun. not doing so causes spotted lighting on thier faces

the pose is okay, but slightly boring. i realize it's a family shot, but you could do something a little more eye catching with them than just side by side in the same pose.

i do like thier smiles.

your exposure is decent considering the lighting conditions and the fact you have white shirts

i would also bring them out from the background a bit to get the background slightly out of focus.

hope these things help

tommy

Sorry to rate this as such, but I am doing it because I looked at your other photos and you are capable of work SO much better than this. Outside under harsh sun? The absolute worse time to take photos, especially of people. The eye squinting is terrible. I also don't really care for the attempt to match the shirts, and Grandma not having a match. Either have them all truly matching, or have them all different. The foreground flowers are very distracting. You should have at least used a much wider aperture to blur out the foreground and background. As the subjects are pretty much on the same focal plane, you could have used a much wider aperture, assuming you have a capable lens and neutral density filter. Bottom line, the photo simply looks like any amateur snapshot that might be taken with a point and shoot camera. It is not indicative of your skill or equipment level.

Thank you for reminding me not to take snapshots, and yes, I could've done better. :o)
