I suppose one could argue about the composition or cropping, but I think that the huge ship in the background serves as a counterpoise to the small surfboard and gives a sense of scale. Obviously he is not traveling in a small canal but a large (and deep) waterway. The dog with a life preserver is priceless! Background a bit hazy but focus and exposure on the subject is excellent. Wish that I had taken it,

Definitely agree that a different position/crop could have turned this into a real winner. However, it does look like there are severe constraints in that regard. Reminds me of one shot I had, and was very proud of, but a pro looked at it and said 'walk away' - you could tell it was an exceptional scene, but it couldn't be well captured. I'm thinking the same thing might apply here. I do love the hood ornament!

thank you Bill...I seem to be in a minority thinking that this composition is not bad, but after all that's why we solicit feedback :)

Hi Rolland! The photo is interesting. But the composition is wrong. By my opinion, try to crop the photo in order to have more space in front of the dog than behind the boy. Possibly even push up the scene on the account of the trees and the big ship.

thanks Lubo. I did try the crop you mention, but it felt unbalanced to me, and there is also an unattractive structure on shore just to the left of the current crop.
