November Assignment for backlit / contre jour work. Early morning at Bosque del Apache in New Mexico. Strong backlighting is an advantage here but not for trying to get shots of the cranes taking off from this one pond.

Hi Paul, very nice sahot endeed. You could take this shot to a 3TU+ if you had not overdone the saturation and sharpening - lover them and get rit of the faint halo - and the sluppy cloning, as John pointed out - you can do better. Super scene, rework it a bit. Best regards.

Hi, Paul. Good mood caught, and I like the colours, but even on my laptop I can see that your post processing work hasn't helped this shot - some things overdone and others left undone. I was hoping to get over to the Bosque; it would be for the first time, but I'm going to have to wait another year, alas, and even miss Hokkaido's cranes this winter. Can't wait til I really retire! But happy hunting out there this winter, and I'm curious to know if you went for that 7D, boyo? Regards. John.

Boyo?! You'll be calling me a 'leeky' next! Agree, shoddy PP. This was not the version that should have gone in but too many good crit's to withdraw it. I spoke with the people down at the Bosque today - record crane arrival this year at 12,000 already in two weeks. They're going to have to roost in shifts! I'm going down weekend after next. To 7D or not to 7D - that is the question. Decision day tomorrow - I'd better go to the liquor store tonight.

Since my nickname is Taff, I won't be calling you Leeky, now would I, boyo? LOL (My father's a Cardiff man). You won't regret getting that 7D, Paul!! The local Japanese bird photographers have gone for it, (alright, the wealthier ones are holding out for the Mk IV) and they're getting some great shots.

My mother was from Risca near Newport, Dad from Pencader near Carmarthan. I should have known you were a Taffy with the name Williams - pronounced ' Whill ee ams'. Oh Lord! You shouldn't have started this.

Thanks Ivica. Hop on a plane - I just heard that the cranes have been arriving in their thousands. There are currently 12,000 there and will be there until February next year. Great place.

Hi Paul. Yes, the start of another season at Bosque. Great subjects for contre-jour. Nicely separated and warm light. I think you overdid the saturation a little but the big problem here is the sloppy cloning. You left artifacts all around. This would easily be a 2TU at least if you were careful. Did you remove weeds, other birds, or both? :)Robin

Hi Robin. I was wondering if any of the bird photographers would take a look. Thank s for the comments. I agree a bit too sloppy. One duck was taken out in the foreground - none of the weeds. I'm heading dow soon and will endeavour to improve on this type of shot.

Robin - quick bit of info' if you are thinking of going to the Bosque. There are already 12,000 cranes there. That is way up there for this time of year. Probably something to do with the huge storm that pushed down through here (CO) a few weeks ago.

Thanks for that info. My buddy is going later this month but I think I cannot get there until late January...

I'll be there Nov 20 - 22. Red GMC truck, black wheels, Welsh dragon decal, gray hair and Canon 500mm. 'Buddy' isn't John Goyer by any chance - been wanting to meet him for a long time.

Paul, nice shot of the cranes, but the post edit seems to have some tell tale tracks, otherwise well done. Regards, Randy

Hi Randy. I'm not sure what the streak is on the right. It is much lighter in the original and not as noticeable?

Great silhouetted cranes, Paul. The oranges, ambers and gold almost glow behind them. I like the straited reflections. Thanks for sharing. Tina

Thank you Tina. This is a great location for migrating cranes. The most spectacular sight is however, 20,000 snow geese lifting off at the same time and flying right over you.

Paul,

Really beautiful shot. Super colours, lovely reflections and great spacing between your subjects. Looks like a wet day - so well done in getting out there with your camera.

Andrew

Hello Andrew. Thank you for looking and the 3TU! It wasn't wet but very cold. The next morning the ponds were frozen over.

Wet? looks totally clear with sun color reflections. If this is "Flawless", please critique my images. :)R

Hi Bahadir. Good words, thnak you. I can assure it is not warm there at all - it feels like your hands are going to stick to the tripod.

You caught the golden light just perfect and the spacing of the birds works so well. I like the silo on the golden pond.

Thnaks Joe. You tend to shoot these shots at this location, trying to get the exposure settings right for the actual shot you are wanting - cranes taking to the air.
