Submission for Scavenger Hunt 2: Contre-Jour

These leaves were about 12 feet (4 meters) above the ground and well beyond where I could get closer. To get this angle and no stray lens flare, I actually had to back up and get about 25 feet away from them and zoom in. This obviously is a tighter crop than the original and some cleanup of other areas was done to give the main subjects a stronger look. :)Robin

At first glance I was going to be critical of the bokeh, but I believe it is flare. Soft focus areas at bottom right are nice, not so with the circles at left. One of the challenges of contre jour. The spider web and hanging moss make me want to see it clearer. I can see the connection, and the placement is pretty good; they appear to be behind the leaf, and are somewhat distracting. I would like to see them either much softer or in sharp focus. Exposure looks good, and the leaves veins are shown well.

Thanks Del. I guess I had 'tunnel vision' with this shot and did not take into account all the surroundings as much as I should have. :)Robin

We all get it to an extent. Most of my self-directed improvement is against target fixation.

Hi Robin, Good effort - the only thing I would comment on regarding the composition is the "thing" on the right hand side? I don't think it's really adding anything to the shot and I think that it could be removed. I really like the fine detail in the leaves and the bright outline around them. Well done!

Thanks Fabian. It's been pretty unanimous (what was I thinking!) that removing the moss and spiderweb would have been the way to go. :)Robin

Hi, Robin,
It's very nice picture with leaves structure and the light. I would say the composition is on a weak side since the leaves are way too close to the center and the moss or something in the background is too prominent, therefore it attracts too much of attention. Back lit branch is nice though not necessary. I think i would crop from top and right to leave leaves to cover almost half of the image diagonally where the remaining image could be OOF background. Rim on the leaves is very nice too. Cheers!

I really think this is a cool shot Robin. The detail one sees in the leaf is quite lovely for sure. The colors in the leaf also stand out for me as well. I would have cloned out that stringy object in the top right hand corner and some of those circular shapes in the backdrop. They are a bit distracting. Overall it is a really pretty photo and quite pleasing to the eye. Donna

I really like the veins seen in the leaves on this one and something that may sound familiar, i would rotate it to the left 90 degrees, crop out the moss and clone out the spider web strand that remains after the crop, that will make the stem more appropiate and balance the leaves directly in our eyesight line without it being center of the image

Hey Ian. Welcome back.

I really like your suggestions - especially rotating the image and getting rid of the other stuff. Thanks. :)Robin

Hi Robin, you had a lot of great suggestions on this one, and I agree with all that has been said. I prefer the 180 degree rotation, and cloning out all the distractions, except the branch supporting the leaves. I would also make this a square frame, since you are so close to being square, it almost looks like a mistake. I liked Jonathan's idea about B&W, but still preferred the colour version, I think the rim lighting loses some of its appeal in the conversion. Take care, Rob.

HI Robin.I really like this light off the leaves and framing of the light around the leaves. The top right corner is a bit distracting to me and I kept putting a piece of paper there to imagine the photo cropped to show only the three leaves...or just the bottom leaf...I think this would work...I like the blurred background otherwise and thank you for sharing. I give this 1.3 thumbs up.

Robin - the backlighting is really great!! In fact, the highlights around the leaves completely define the shot. Well executed, especially given challenging conditions. My advice would be to look for any way to simplify this shot - and keep the eye on the highlights. In that regard, I might try a square crop (if possible, remove all distractions (moss) and put this image in black and white with a white frame. Re the BW - the image seems to have great tones and I think it would look great converted. Cheers! Jonathan

Thanks Jonathan. I already looked at a version rotating the image 90 degrees counterclockwise and cloning out the moss and spiderweb. It looks even better. David & John thought a 180 would work well too. I will check out a B&W version too per your suggestions. Appreciate your thoughts. :)Robin

I like the effect of the light on the leaves - rotating this 180 sounds like a really good idea, and cropping or cloning the moss out would be best for me - the minor blemishes on the leaves bother me a little as does that spider web on the upper left leaf - great background and colors - John

As I told Donna, it is not so easy to find these leaves backlit and so well isolated. I like the almost gradient feel to the shadow especially on the lower leaf. The moss in the upper right corner seems more like an intruder in the composition and doesn't really work for me. I think it would have been stronger with just the leaves.

Ian suggested I rotate this 90 CCW and clone out the moss and it looks super that way. At least I am learning while kicking myself... Thanks David. :)R

My opinion, 180 degree rotation, then it looks like it is growing towards the light or sky.

Robin, I think this qualifies for the catagory. I do like the transparency of the leaves and the pattern the veins make. The color I don't like much (MOO). The bright thing in upper right corner distracts, the bg is nicely oof abet the circle look is slightly busy. Not bad but not as good as you can do. Carole

Hi Carole. I had lots of ideas but have not gotten out enough. I kinda like this but wasn't sure about the moss in the corner. Thanks. :)Robin

Hi Robin!

1,5 TU. Nice Contre-jour submission!  I like the color of the leaves and the bright, white  outline of them caused by the back-light looks great. Lighting was managed really well. I also like the placement of the 3 leaves within the frame.

I am not so fond about the bright, blurred object (is that the moss?) running through the image on the upper right corner, for me it is a distraction, my suggestion is to clone it out.

The dark twig on the left  is also distracting a bit - I don't suggest to clone it out - as the result would probably look strange, like the leaves are floating in the air - I guess, I would have tried a different POV to avoid that  the twig is in front of the leaf.

But still, a very nice and pleasing contre-jour image!

Cheers, Karin

Hi Karin. I knew some folks might not like the moss on the edge of a tree but I didn't want to take the leaves completely out of their true environment and opted to leave it in because it had a nice diagonal.

As for the twig, I agree about not cloning it out to avoid 'floating' leaves.

If you were with me, you would know that:

1)There was not much leeway from getting a good angle in a backlit subject when the sun is coming through a bunch of tree trunks.

2)The twig unfortunately is what is attached to the leaves and holding them up (Nature can be so cruel!) so I had no choice with the back lighting needed. Regards, :)Robin

I was going to pass by this one when I checked out the photos but I saw it had no critiques and it was the backlit assignment. Decided to check it out though I was unimpressed until I opened it. Now I see the lovely transluscence of the leaves, and was glad I checked this out. Nicely done on such a simple subject. I like it. Judy
