Hi Donna,
I think it's a stunning and well exposed photo. Really enjoying the shallow depth of field and the colours of the shot. Well done!

Hi, Donna,
The colors are absolutely gorgeous here! The feel of fall is so well expressed in this picture. Though i would love to see more DOF as those two bigger leaves on the left somewhat occupy a lot of space that is not so interesting being out of focus. I would also probably crop the small pieces of leaves that are on the right edge.Cheers!

It is always difficult to choose what to keep sharp and what to leave soft when shooting this close. Keeping the stem relatively sharp was a good idea; also good to have some of the leaves in good focus. Unfortunately, the largest leaf is out of focus, and it serves as an eye magnet. You had two principles running counter here, keeping the sun behind the branch and finding a shooting position that let you manage the in and out of focus areas; very difficult.

Thanks Del for writing in. This was a tough one to photograph. But certainly one I will be trying again. Donna

Nice colours Donna, i cant help but think that a much tighter crop to avoid the out of focus leaves would be another option and resize the frame, i dont know why but big frames just bounce out at me and take a little ettention away from the main image

Hi Donna, you were able to capture some wonderful light in this, and I love the way the sun is streaming down on the yellow leaves. The contrast of the great autumn colours against the black and dark green background sets a very interesting mood for this; calm, yet very bright. The beautiful hues, play of light and golden glow of Autumn make this a simple, but interesting capture. And from the comments below, it also seems very inspiring to the group. Take care, Rob.

Hi Donna - I like the light through the leaves and the framing. I think the colors are lovely and bright and it is pleasing to look at. I would have preferred the leaf to the left not be cut off and some of the leaves to be more in focus. I thank you for sharing this and must say I gave this "take a picture of leaves against the light" try and didn't even come close to achieving this - thank you for the motivation! 1.3 thumbs up.

hi, Donna...nicely done and very successfuly balanced composition for contre-jour category...Sharpness and colour contrast are awesone...i like your framing preference for dark ...But unfortunately two blur, sizely larger leaves and white out line around the inner frame are standing out from the concept...I give this 1.8TU out of 2...WElldone ..... Hi Donna!

1 1/2 TU rounded up .

This image is really not that easy to rate - the backlighting is great for the contre-jour category - I love the beautiful bright colors, the background that changes from green to black is just perfect - you managed the lighting conditions really well, no overexposed areas - it could be an excellent photo, if all the leafs were in focus. I also think the top leaf is a good addition, it looks like it is just about to fall off - too bad its cropped off on the left - but still, a very enjoyable image and a nice memory of fall that soon will be over -

Cheers, Karin

This photo is visually simple and yet I have tried to make a photo like this and it is much harder than it looks. The hard part is finding a location where the background is dark to really highlight and contrast the light coming through the yellow leaves. I think you found a very good setting for this kind of shot.

A rule that I have, which is a personal rule, is that you want to minimize the number of subjects that are touching and coming in or out of the frame. In this case, I would have cropped some of the right side to remove the one two leaves that are partially out of the frame. I think it makes the composition a tad less busy.

Like many things in photography, you have a little more respect for a photo which one has attempted and not achieved when you see one that has achieved.

While the overall effect is very pleasing, the large black border works well, and the color scheme is enjoyable, and the light is good, with closer inspection I'm bothered that the majority of the leaves are OOF.

(I also like the composition.)

And so while my initial response is very positive, IMO the out of focus leaves mean that this is not an image that I would return to.

The one in the middle left bothers me the most.

I like the color, contrast with the background, and vibrancy of the leaf petioles. I wish there was more depth of field and that more of the leafs were distinct and showing individual outlines.

Hi Donna. This is a tough composition to nail with all the stems and leaves and different things in and out of focus. You did alright in that department but there are some large leaves that are yellowish blobs on the left that hurt this a bit. Some careful cloning might help. Green OOF background is helping and I really like the choice of a black border for this image.

As for the contre-jour it's a funny thing to see shadows on some of the leaves and some give the impression that they are top lit more than backlit. Thus, I am a bit disjointed on the lighting which of course is very important to this category more so. Not sure how to really judge the success of this but I do like the shadow play and the dark angled stem. Perhaps some added contrast could help the shadows be even stronger and thus make the back and top lighting seem bolder.

This is was a tough one so forgive my wishy washy banter. 1 solid TU. :)Robin

Hi Donna. Nice image! I can feel the warmth it tries to deliver to the viewer. However, I think it will be interesting if you decreased the aperture. In this way, more leaves will be in focus and the green background will be a great bokeh. But still a good take. Thanks for sharing!
