Lauren, I really like the colors of the image you have submitted for the "Liquid" category of the scavenger hunt. Your capture of the bubbles is really well done.

The two drawback for this image I feel is for the lighting you used which creates very intense shadows. A problem I had on several of my own entries. The then the crop, which I feel is a little too tight for the subject you used.

Still a nice effort here. If you get a chance to fixed these problems and resubmit later I will be happy to critique again.

TFS - Ralph

Love the colors, but I'm looking for a treatment of this with a little softer/larger light source to reduce the specular highlights, the harshness of the shadow on the background, and make it a little cleaner. A little cleaner look to the background would complete the effect.

hi,Lauren...

Actually very intriguing image for liquid ..Colors and bubbles are nice...Shadows at background could be controoled and erased...Vertical composition is very successfull but could be better...Good effford and overall interesting approach to the category...welldone..

I like the upper part of the goblet and the bubbles. The lower part, or whatever it is, seems messy and unattractive. Then there's that big drop at the bottom edge and a slightly messy white background. The crop seems also too tight, and if you had to have a shadow present (better not to) you should have shown it all.

Obviously not 'uninspired', but just doesn't appeal to me.

Kind of interesting idea for that picture. I like the bubbles and the reflection. Could be a better POV (for the shadow).

Lauren,
It's a good concept and I think it could work. What's letting it down for me is the lighting. The shadow behind the "object" is quite harsh and the lighting in general rather dull. Try playing around with possibly moving the light away from the camera, or using natural light on it's own. Using a slow shutter might actually work to your advantage since it'll make the water look a lot more attractive.

I do like the colors and the bubbly effect in this photo for sure. That was what caught my attention. That shadow in the back is a bit distracting. I think what you are having the most trouble with is your lighting. That takes a lot of practice but you will get it if you keep working at it. Overall a nice effort here Lauren. Donna

Hi, Lauren,
This picture is interesting in it's water structure and shape, however it feels like it's almost a mugshot of some bottle with strong shadow behind and harsh light. I think you did quite good job "arranging" water, however you could explore angles a little better. The other thing that might be interesting to explore is crop - i instinctively would want much more space on the left and probably less space on the right, but i am not sure. Cheers!

Hi Lauren! The bubbles are great - and as such, I think you should have made them much more the focus of the shot. I don't think the glass adds anything to the shot and therefore, I think you should have chosen a clear glass or a wine glass, so as to focus the eye only on the bubbles. I might have tried to come over the top of the glass a bit more also. Great potential in this shot! Jonathan

It could be gassy as well as liquid with all those bubbles. Exposure looks ok, focus is ok (but I would prefer to see more depth - a creative choice I would have made differently). But what hampers this the most in my view is that the composition is very cramped. I am not sure how vital the bottom is, since it is soft and a different color, but losing some of this for more space at the sides would be an improvement. The hard light shows itself both in the shadows and in refraction through some of the bubbles and glass. A softer source would not eliminate the spots on the background (that look like artifacts), but it would lessen their impact.

An intriguing image - seeing the bubbles adds to the impact of the photo, but takes away a little of the liquid/fluid feel - having a slow shutter speed and blurred water would be more liquidly for me, but I may be in the minority here ;-) The harsh shadow detracts, and looking down like this is not as dramatic as looking upward might be - or using a mirror at the bottom, to shoot down, yet still capture the upward look! Hi Lauren, while I don't think anyone could argue that this doesn't meet the liquid category, I do have to wonder about the execution of this. Although, the stop-action from the flash is great, the harsh lighting (and shadow) it also creates is the biggest issue for me. My best advice to you would be to stop using direct onboard flash to light your images. If you can, try bouncing your flash off a ceiling, or wall to diffuse the lighting more. If your flash can not be rotated to do that, stop using it and find another source of lighting for your photos. I recently purchased three 500-watt halogen lights and started experimenting with them with some good results. They were relatively cheap (about $30/light) and well worth the cost. Hope some of that helps. Take care, Rob.

I am sorry to say Lauren that there isnt anything i can see in this image to attract my attention, the bottom part of the glass(the green) is out of focus, the base the glass is sitting on is a dull colour and not complimentory to the overall shot at all, the shadow is distracting, there is no uniformity to the water gushing into the blue part of the glass, i think maybe if the tap was on slower it would have given you a more controlled look to the bubbles

what comes to my mind is to take some time to set up this shot, what i would do is try and find a way to shine a light up through the base of the glass, a torch would do the job, then turn all the lights out and take the shot from side on rather than looking down, i dont mean to offend you by explaining a different shot so i hope i havent.

Ian

Hi again Lauren. Gosh, this is wild to look at. I am at a bit of a loss. The foamy stream coming down looks so strange that it has the look more of a glass sculpture than actual liquid.

I love the blue part of the glass and the thousands of bubbles are really great. There's enough contrast there and between that and the reflected and refracted light, there is a lot of depth to the foam. I'd like to know what your secret potion is for creating such a bubbly, effervescent concoction!

(Yikes, somehow I hit some wrong key on my keyboard and lost all of my firefox website tabs including this crit I was in the middle of. Now, 15 minutes later, I was able to get it back...geez I need a new computer!)

I don't love the green base but what is really hurting this for me is the ugly off-white background. First I would crop up to remove some of the base and background. If you know a little Photoshop or similar, I would try to change the tone and shading of the backdrop. Even adding some more contrast would make the shadow (which I don't mind) stand out better and maybe even more of the bubbles. 1.3TU with the ugly background... :)Robin

:-) thank you ...I will keep trying...as for my secret...it was an accident... :-) ...I just kept the water ruuning and used the flash...it was a tight fit...so it was almost like a macro ... :-)

Hi Lauren! I like the colors here - the image is also crisp and sharp on the top - the idea is good, but I am not so sure about the execution - I can't really tell exactly why, but it does not appear too esthetically to me - it's a bit too foamy - IMO without so much overflow it would be better - Cheers, Karin

One one level, I find the photograph intriguing because the the water out of the faucet has so many bubbles even before it hits the glass. I find the base of the glass to be less interesting because it is out of focus. I think the action is in the top half of the photo and a crop would be in order. I am not a fan of the shadow either. Maybe lightening it, cloning it out or even cropping it out may be better.

When I look at a photo, I look to where the action is and then ask does the surroundings add to the action/story or not. If it doesn't, then crop it out. The action seems to be the falling water and the bubble created at the top, so crop to that story.

I like the shutter speed chosen. A significantly slower shutter speed and we might have lost the texture of the bubbles, but a little slower might have added an interesting texture. I wonder if you experimented with shutter speed to look for that. The use of flash might have prevented much experimentation or even hindered the effect since flash will sometimes stop motion even when the shutter speed is longer. Working with different angles to get a different points of view might have been done. This seems to be a somewhat traditional down looking angle.

Hi David - thank you - yes...I was looking down..hard to do otherwise within the space confines - and yes re the flash - I do see what you mean about the cropping..thank you.
