This is gorgeous - unlike any photograph of the ocean I have ever seen! I'm always especially impressed with a nature shot when someone can manage to do something totally unique with it, since waves have been photographed how many times since the invention of the camera? I'm curious, What size have you printed this work? It strikes me as one that would look great if were a yard across.

I guess you didn't read the comment. This is not the ocean but a windy day on Mono Lake. I hope that doesn't change your impression of the photo. Thanks.

No I missed the comment. It does not change my opinion of the photo - it is stunning.

My problem is that I have nothing to criticsize. I just love the structure, the lines and the composition of this beautiful picture. BR Peter Nielsen

Osmosis? Where's the semi-permeable membrane?
A great shot. Very nice colours and textures.
Cheers,

It is located between the brown/yellow water and the clearer water....... In truth, the title is an inside joke from the trip. I probably would have titled it something less thought provoking such as Mono Lake Wind Swell, as it was very windy which created these conditions. Thanks Neil.

Your welcome, I counted 15 words in my critique and it ended up being non-conforming, but the picture was too good not to comment. The timing and light were great on the water. My best. Stan

You misspelled "movement", but in the big picture, it doesn't really matter. Now, if you misspelled my address sending a check for a purchase, then THAT would matter. ;)

The is an OH WOW shot! The colors are just oustanding as are the effects. You really have two pictures in here. If you cropped off the top 35% (just above where all the swrirling takes place), you have a more calm looking abstraction. ........ As it is, I MIGHT be tempted to crop UP just a bit to get a little of the reddish color out of frame....it looks a bit "noisy" down there---even looks like auburn hair!......Regardless, the one thing I;d definitely do, is crop out a VERY small amount (about 5%) off the top where the water is moving quite horizontally........But this is, obviously YOUR piece of work (art) and these are simply MY comments =).........One word fits for sure, though: Unique. Another few words that fit are: "Buy a frame!"

My crop decision was based on keeping a diagonal of whitish water that streams back from the highest point of the crest. The original was a vertical orientation with even more above that was removed. The bottom is pretty much the bottom of the original. Thanks Mike.

Perfect shutter speed renders terrific detail and the tones, wherever you got them from, are sensational. I'm guessing the square format was an expedient crop and it works fine. Well done. Regards..hank

For part of the trip I was using a tilt shift lens and stitching two photos together so I have been experimenting with more square type crops. This was not taken with that lens, but thought I would continue with the square crop to get a slightly different look to my photos. Thanks Hank.

ok, I'll round up for the nice abstract nature and the sense of motion and chaos and yet not chaos because in reality there is a pattern to the wave, which is the opposite of chaos, nice shot.

Thanks Sebastian. Actually this is more chaotic than my "usual" wave photos, but even in chaos, there is sometimes some structure, as you pointed out.

May I nominate this for my all-time favourite photo here? You have surpassed yourself David - and that takes some doing! I am now even more envious of you lucky guys on the trip...

Gorgeous David - I wish I had been on this part of the trip to see you in action! Only thought is that the upper and lower parts compete a bit - they're both incredibly beautiful but I wonder how this would be turned into two images - each with the upper or lower parts cropped? J

Cropping to make two phtoos would certainly add to the abstractness of either half, but I think the "integrity" of the wave would then be totally lost for me. In both looking at and creating abstracts, I like to keep some semblance of the true nature of the subject somewhat intact...... if that makes any sense.

Late afternoon and partly cloudy, if I remember correctly. I was waiting for a sunset to develop and killed some time taking photos of the small waves lapping up against the shoreline.

Hi David. Just saw this one! OUTSTANDING. Very effective with the square crop. I could see this blown up to 36x36 and mounted on aluminum with a plexi overlay. Awesome work. Steve
