Sometimes familiar objects photographed in a simple way reveal surprising beauty. This is nothing new of course but I rediscovered it today.

I find this to be a very interesting subject, but see a couple of things missing here: first of all, the plane's focus is just subtly off (or so it seems to my eye, and I've taken zillions of OOF pictures, so I consider myself an expert! lol) Second, either due to whatever material you have it resting on, the lighting or perhaps this was simply cut out and pasted on white in PS, it appears to be floating in negative white space, unanchored and therefore, not as interesting. I am sure it could still be photographed on a white background, but I don't like the unsettling feeling of floating here. And one final, nitpicky note: perhaps if you just slightly turned the plane with its nose to face the camera (literally just a wee bit more) it might give even more of a three-dimensional affect, and allow the viewer to get a real feeling for this wonderful old tool. Thank you for the close observation. Due to the fact that my set up is very home made I had to cut the plane out of the original whitish background and put it on a white fill layer so you are quite right about that. ( I also have not sharpened it with usm so perhaps it is not a lens focus issue) The floating in space effect and straight on view is a reaction I am having to my old habits of over-cooking things! Perhaps I'll get over it!
