One of a number of experimental shots I took inspired by baba/david and his long exposure surf shots. This was taken after sunset as the light was getting very dim, and I had a lot of noise showing up in the background - I made a duplicate layer, adding motion blur, and then a slight gaussian blur - I used a reveal layer mask to carefully let the unblurred head show through to give some sharpness to the image. Any suggestions or comments on the technique or the results would be welcome - I'm not totally happy with the texture in the background even though it does add a slight feel of motion, and would like to hear what you think!

This one doesn't work for me, John. There's not enough interest in this semi-static composition, and the blurred effect just does not do any anything for me here, perhaps because both foreground and background are blurred and lack enough separation. The one TU is for having the nerve to post such a photo, and for trying something different! BTW, can you send your email address to me at mike@fhipa.com ?

lol! Thanks for the feedback - I definitely need some help with these shots, and I think you raised some of the issues I was wondering about - a few other variations on this might look better - stay tuned, and don't worry about red thumbs! John

The darkness and lines stand out right away as weaknesses. It may have been a little too dark for a successful slow shutter photo. As well none of the bird appears in sharp focus. Usually one part is. If you are lucky it is the one part that you want in focus, like the head at the point when it is motionless as the bird flaps its wings. It might be easier to get the bird gliding as more parts would be relatively motionless for the duration of the photo.

Ideally you want to have the camera mounted on a tripod and the subject running parallel to the camera so the AI focus can track it better (if you use AF).... and of course shoot in bursts. I have posted a few slow shutter surfing photos, only one which I think came out really well.

I am used to see super sharp images from you and this one was 3TD at the beginning but after I study it more carefully I start to like it very much. The head and the neck of this bird needs little more blur also the BG shows some greenish bluish kind of noise which is killing this shot and try to remove noise totally and just leave the colors in the BG. Thanks

Thanks for taking a look and staring for a while! I'm not at all sure about this one which is why I wanted to post it - I could rate it between 2TU and 2TD but I think the idea has potential - appreciate your thoughts on it! John

This no good at all. Blur it more liquify the wings and then post it as abstract. May be at Art|sig. As it is other than the form and color there is not much here but eyes that return disappointed. Regards ifti

Hi ifti - good to have your thoughts on this - I'll return to this idea again, and hopefully there will be more to please the eyes in those shots - and if not, let me know - thanks for taking a look! John

Why ArtSig, It belongs here, where he can get sound advice (not saying at all that Artsig doesn't give sound advice, they do!), even if it is heavily post treated. If it came from a lens Iftikhar, it belongs here.
Cheers, Evan

Hi John, One of the rare times I can write a critique on one of your birding shots and not be the 20th reviewer. I see you're experimenting, which is always good, but compared to the crisp vibrant bird shots you have this one is much weaker. More than anything for me , it's the dull colors. The softness is an artistic call - although I prefer the crisper shots. A suggestion, if you're looking to do some artistic type of stuff, take one of your great shots and try a photoshop pluggin like buzz.x which can make really nice watercolors effects from the image. Regards. David

HI John, sorry for the thumbs down, but you ask for opinions,The whole bird is just to blurry,if you want the feeling of motion the brids wings should show blur and nothing else,IMO anyway

No problems about the TD - this is enough away from my usual shots that I don't have a good feeling for it, and I'm happy to get your response - thanks! John

I love the technique, although I think a wee bit more sharpness to the head would have been good. Also, I get the feeling that his left wing is a bit too close to the top edge. Wonderfully moody image, though!
All the best / Eric

Hi Eric - at 1/60th that's all the sharpness I could manage! I think you're right about the wing being too close too - glad you liked the mood, I'll see if I can keep that and improve the rest! John

The shot has some potential, but I would like to see the bird alot sharper, the background looks fine to me the gradual colour stratifacations work well to show off the bird.

Hi John. It's great that you're trying new things. I'm not sure of what to think of it. But I can tell you that I don't care for the horizontal lines throughout the image and that it is way too dark to be enjoyed. But I'm sure you'll come up with the perfect formula eventually! Best regards

John, I like the pastel-like surface and the ghostly quiet of it. I too would prefer the bird lower in the frame.

I really like the background...I almost wish we could see it without the bird. Very cool to see you trying new stuff....as someone said...no doubt you will figure out a way to make this work...and start a whole genre of bird photography! I look forward to seeing how this idea progresses. Carole

lol! I'll give it a try next year - I stopped at 1/60th this year mainly because by the time the light was that low, I was frozen solid! I could have shot slower with a lower iso, but didn't think of doing that at the time - J

I guess I should add my image stabilization isn't working correctly so I've been shooting these without it, and 1/60th is pretty slow with that lens!
