This was taken during the tidal surge weekend 9,11,07. The couple and their kids got soaked even though the kids got to the top of the steps

wow what a capture. and your vantage point makes it appear as though you are standing over the water if that makes sense - hope your gear stayed dry. great timing and choice of black and white. cheers

I disagree with some of the critiques. This photograph category is a "Decisive Moment" as many mentioned and not a portrait or anything. The objects that are around the splashing wave such as the car and people add to the effect and the usage of the photo in my eyes. It creates a sense of danger and wondering what will happen next and thats what I like about the photo. Very unique and perfectly captured. Only complaint is a bit to grainy in the clouds. Well done and thanks for sharing!

I would have loved to have taken this shot as I have a soft spot for wave shots. You framed it well. I am not bothered by the car as it goes with the residential feel of the shot. I think a little dodging of the wave and playing with contrast could bring a little more definition to the wave.

Caddy, I've rated this pic as 3-thumbs up due to patience and ingenuity of the photographer. This is not an easy shot to get, regardless of the type of equipment and I don't want a few technical aspects to overshadow that recognition. Thanks for sharing your perceptions and talent with all of us. Phil

You are intended to rate the photo - not the personal attributes of the person who took it or how hard it was to get! Patience hardy seems an appropriate word anyway if you read the comments.

WOW - great moment, impressive image. A few things unfortunately, uhm the car is a distraction, can probably be cloned. The guys are unfortunately a little too far to the right. Almost a competition winner. ;o)-max-

The photo was taken in the right moment and the b/w works very well here.
What I don't like at all is the composition. The wave in the center and the horizon nearly in the middle make the image a bit boring. It's hard to decide wheather the wave or the people are the main theme. A change of perspective would help.
In my opinion it would be better to see more of the sea and cut off the houses as well as moving the horizon either up or down to a third of the image. Even cropping some of the houses on the right (just left of the chair) seems to improve the overall impression. Why not give it a try?

Hi Cad! This is an excellent example for being at the right place at the right point in time with a camera - it's really great how you were able to catch the wave! B&W works well, but I'd also like to see the color version. As you stated you used a film, I guess by scanning the image some of the sharpness was lost. Thanks for sharing - Rgds Karin

The decisive moment indeed! Even more Amazing as you were using a bronica, not renowned for its portability. Great capture, but as you probably know the wave being dead center reduces the impact slightly. I would also suggest burning the highlights a bit on the sea in order to emphasize the wave

Well thanks for your comments - I couldn't however change the compo because i was facing the other way. I clocked this big wave rolling in out of the corner of my eye thought some people have just walked past me they are going to get soaked. Jumped up turned around and hit the shutter. Yep its an epson 4990 scan so not the best.
