A belted kingfisher diving for fish. They're impossible to approach so I took this shot from across the pond at about 9:30am on a cloudy day. It was necessary to leave a large crop to prevent any loss in detail. Please let me know what you think! Thanks for visiting.

A sweet shot - but high quality or master quality, it is not. the bird is blurred, not necessarily a bad thing but here the motion blur is not adding. Perfect focus would have been awesome, but .. ;o)-max-

Hi Max. I know it's not perfect but to date it's my best kingfisher image- so I'll take it. I agree that giving it some motion blur would have improved it. Thanks for stopping by. Regards

Wow..great timing on this shot. There is a slight blur on the side, but that probably could not be helped. Excellent capture!

Hi Sarah. It's my best kingfisher image to date, so I'll keep it- blurriness and all! Thank you for the kind words! Regards

Great camera with great lens handled by opportunistic camera man. I agree with using a slightly faster shutter speed. I can't help but notice a slight blur a little left from the centre. What is it? Anyways, 3TU for serious work. Well done Shawn.

Hi Eu Jim. Thank you for the generous critique and I'm happy you like this image. About the slight blur- I think I see what you're talking about but I haven't the slightest hint what it is/was. Thanks again! Regards

This is powerful shot. The bird has its radar eyes locked on to target and full speed ahead. The main strength of the picture is its action and rest really does not count. You were there and then acted quickly. Bravo. Regards ifti

OK it's official, I hate you now :) well not really but I envy you this. I've been trying to get a good Kingfisher shot but I'm not there yet, let alone get one diving. I like the space he's diving into and the BG has complimentary colours without detracting from the bird. The only thing I'd ask is the bird to be bigger in the frame. BTW EXIF says you used a 1.4x and had 1/640th @ f5.6. Howard

LOL. Hey Howard! Thanks for giving me a laugh first thing in the morning. You know I feel for you! They are very tough birds to get because they like to keep their distance and are very flighty- well at least with this variety. I also wish the bird was bigger in the frame- if I only had an 800mm lens... oops, I guess you're right... I AM doomed!

I remember you mentioned that you tried to get a kingfisher using the pre-focus button on your lens. I was able to pre-focus then I turned the AF off then waited.

Thank you for the EXIF correction- my main computer, in which I use PS to get that info is in the shop and I used the known settings from a similar image.

Thanks for stopping by! And as always- I enjoy hearing from you! Regards ~Shawn BTW: I could have used that 800mm this past week. I captured a bald eagle as it attempted to take a fish from an osprey in mid-air. I lost so much detail from the distance but managed to get an awesome silhouette of the action! I'll be posting the shot in the near future- after we get our computer with Photoshop back!

Nice catch Shawn. I know how hard it is to catch these guys and you did well. Nice idea for the crop also. I'm surprised you could even get on him with that monster lens...

Thank you Dan. I spent alot of time with this little guy. He way going back and forth on a tree limb so I was able to get a decent focus on it. Thanks for stopping by to critique my image. Best regards.~Shawn

What a quick catch Shawn, a liitle soft focusing on the king fisher but it is good enough for 1/1000 secs shutter speed considering the high flying speed of the bird. Background is nice and well blurred to pop it up. Cheers......Edwin

Thanks Edwin for your helpful critique. I think I lost a little sharpness from the crop factor. I appreciate your feedback. Best regards. ~Shawn

What a great shot. I love the motion that you show here. Your image is super sharp for the speed of this guy. I wish that we could see the water that he was about to dive into. Great shot. I love it. Thanks

Great shot and wonderful comp Shawn & Amy. You were ready at the right place and the right time again. The detail suffers a little at iso 800, but there is enough to make this a special shot indeed. The BG doesn't look quite right for some reason for a bird travelling so fast. I wonder what it would look like if you added some motion blur to the BG layer? Thanks for showing us such a nice variety of wonderful avian shots. Best regards - Doug

Hi Doug. I agree a bg blur would have added drama to the shot. I wish these birds were more accessible to practice shooting with. I was lucky enough that this one came in the area in hunting mode with plenty of dead trees around for perches. I have several fishers on a stick. Thanks for stopping by! Regards

A dramatic capture, Shawn of a moment we rarely get a chance to see. This is a tough shot to get. I like the composition, good detail on Kingfisher, and your great teamwork on the BG! Nice work. John

Very nice shot Shawn. I cant beleive the detail you have captured on this kingfisher with hardly any motion blur. Great catch. Nice composition and very good background as well. Very immpressive shot. Well done

Hey man nice shot, heard that before somewhere..... Looks a little soft on the focus but my respects for capturing anything but a blur. Would really loved to have seen this with a pan, and motion blur in the bg, but it's still a great capture.

Hello Dear Shawn. The bird is as say as "Get out of the way! I'm coming!" Great shot. Timing is very good. The bird's location is very good at the frame. Sharp, lighting, composition, captured to the moment are very good. Thanks for share it. Best regards...
