Hi Alex - quite a cute shot and I like the enclosed feel to it - the surroundings aren't the most photogenic, but you've done a good job handing them I think - the tones of the elephant don't look exactly right like you may have used shadow/highlight? Of course I haven't seen one of these recently so I could be totally off there! I'd apply a bit of contrast and saturation boost with curves just to bring a bit more of the color in the skin out - good shooting! John

Those eyes. Lucy's eyes almost seem mournful within the setting of the somewhat small room. They speak of confinement, and the vignetting and use of the extreme vertical format and wide angle lens selection brings out this mood. Your lighting, exposure, and color, are perfect. A good photograph has to move the viewer through emotion. This image has done that for me. Excellent work. TED

thanks Ted. the room was about 25' square and lucy was half in half out. she was really badly backlit due to sky lights and big gas lights she was about 3' in front of me and her trunck was all over the camera. i had never been with an elephant before and it was quite an intimidating experience. though she is a big pussy cat the size is frightening. the keeper told me to be very careful to make sure she knew where i was as she could step on me and not know it! it was a great experience. unfortunetly it was very cold and lucy had to stay inside. ps lucy can't chew bubble gum. cheers alex.

I don't mind the location -- you can't do anything about that -- but the vignette is FAR too heavy for this image. Vignetting and other Photoshop trickery should be used judiciously, so it doesn't get in the way as it did here. I don't see a reason for this vignetting.

yes understandably Ray but if you had seen original you might have scrapped it. i was limited as to my movements and bg was so poor and backlit i wanted rid of it and to focus on subject. thanks for your comments. alex

Interesting capture of a big and interesting subject. The cell it is in isn't particularly photogenic. Would have been a better shot outside, IMHO. And I thought elephants with small ears were Indian, not African elephants, who have very large ears. Regards, Steve.
