Sheila this is definitely a good quality photo yet there are some rather bothersome elements form me. Number one is the log on the shirt, and number two is the background, which is rather busy. I believe all of this could be remedied by cropping to your subjects head and punching up the levels a tad. Good portrait, and I appreciate the fact that you didnt use the dreaded on board flash. hi Josh and thanks so much for the feedback! you're right about the logo on my husband's shirt, as well as that background being distracting. i work on re-cropping this to see if i can eliminate some of that. i'll also work on brightening the shadows on his face some as you suggested. thanks for the help with this one! :) Cheers! sheila

Hi, Sheila,

Excellent honest expression. But, very even light has flattened his face. I don't know if you feel like tackling this shot . . . but I like tweaking and this is what I would do:

The background is too light, his shirt and hat very dark - so you can't just increase contrast without drawing attention away from his face. So . . . isolate his face and protect it. Dim down the background and the white writing on his shirt. Then isolate his face and on his FACE ONLY try Contrast at +30 and dim it a little to Brightness -15. See what you think.

Another way of looking at this is by looking at your shot of you parents. The light on your dad's face is great, shows lots of character. The light on your mom's face is too even - can be flattering, but doesn't show her character.

Wow! really great critique that i really appreciate!! you make some excellent points, and i agree with them. i will definitely take this one back and work on it with the suggestions you mentioned. i think it'll look a lot better that way!

what you said about that picture of my parents...again, you're right on. i love how my dad looks, but the lighting on mom's face isn't very good. i printed that one out but haven't framed it 'cause i'm just not happy with it. i need to work on that one some more too!

thanks a bunch for all the help! i really appreciate it!! :) Cheers! sheila

He does look tired :-) Given the expression on his face, maybe he wasn't in a mood to have his picture taken, either, but since he's a photog, he really can't say no, can he? :-) Pleasant snap with good lighting and detail on his face. In this respect, B&W works well here, since the environment is otherwise dark, giving emphasis on his face. Your blacks might be a little too dark - the shirt seems to melt into the wall, but that may be just be my horrible laptop monitor. The background behind the head is just a touch distracting - an even shallower DOF on a long lens would probably fix that problem. Take care Sheila!

hi Paul, and thanks so much for the feedback! yeah, Kemal was too tired to pose, so i just let him enjoy his coffee and cigarette while i snapped a few pictures of him. :) once he got some caffeine and nicotine in him, he started goofin' off in front of the camera! :)

yep...i agree about the background. it definitely is a distraction. i see what you're saying about the blacks too. i can see the difference between the shirt and the wall, but i don't think there's enough separation. i'll see if i can fix it so there's a better separation like in this one.

thanks again, Paul! i really appreciate it! take it easy, sheila
