this is the natural color of my cat's eyes. i didn't change the color at all in postwork. she's a GORGEOUS black kitty and knows it!!! LOL! i converted the image to b/w but decided to leave the eyes in color...thought it made for a more dramatic portrait. i'd like YOUR opinion though! I appreciate the time you take to look and give me some feedback!! thanks! :) p.s. this was hand-held.

Hi Sheila. I very much like your beautiful cat, but I especially like the composition here, photographed from below certainly gives your kitty a very powerful presence in front of your lens. I read some of the reviews where it is suggested that you play with your image in Photoshop with desaturations, etc.... I really do not think that is necessary. What you needed here in this shot, simply stated was a litte larger dof.... it does not have to be much larger, just large enough to get all those fading hairs under the chin into focus. One of the problems with Sony Cameras is that they make it difficult for you to control aperture and shutter speeds... but it is doable... I would suggest in this shot that with that really sharp Carl Zeiss lens on the F828, you could have sharpened those chin hairs with the aperture stopped down to f/2.5 (just a guess). Nice work, all my best, Michael.

thanks so much for taking the time to give me some feedback on this one, Michael! I think you're absolutely right about me needing to close my aperture a bit here so my DOF is a little larger. that definitely would have helped me get more of her hairs in focus as you said! thanks for that reminder!! And you're so right about that Carl Zeiss lens; it's FANTASTIC!!! i just gotta learn how to use my cam better until it becomes 2nd nature. :) sometimes when i'm shooting, i have the hardest time knowing exactly how much to open my aperture/how much to close it. in this case, i knew i wanted a shallow DOF to make Pixie stand out, but knowing how much to open it...now that's where i have difficulty sometimes. i guess it just takes a lot of practice...well, at least it does for me anyway! :) thanks so much again for your feedback and help here, Michael!! i really do appreciate it!!! :) have a great day! sheila

Lovely photo of a cat with attitude! Good sharp focus and excellent colors. Leaving color in the eye works well.

Couple of nits - I think I'd move the catchlight in the right eye to 10 o'clock for balance with the left. And clone out what appears to be air vents on the bg wall. Beautiful cat. david

thanks so much, David, for taking the time to look and give me some feedback! great idea to clone out that distracting stuff on the wall! moving the catchlight...i think you're right...would look better if they were in the same place in each eye. i'm not sure i know how to move it though. i'm still trying to learn all this photo-editing stuff. i think my husband knows how to do that. i'll ask him how to do it when he wakes up! :) thanks a bunch, David, for your suggestions!! :)

you did a great job here Sheila. i love your selective desaturation here. the moment caught is really nice. i know how hard it is to work with animals. nothing distracting or whatsoever. sharpness is good. i'm not too sure about the b&w tones. really gorgeous cat as you know and as he/she knows:)) thanks for sharing.

I think that removing the color here is NOT the right thing to do. The color of the eyes in this case is called in to question. The eye color along with there smoothness look unnatural when the rest has been coverted to B&W. And it would be better with the OoF pictures in the background "removed" - esp the one over the head.

Nice cat portrait. I like the overall look with the contrast between the black fur and light background and the eyes are definitely crazy looking (but in a good way if that makes any sense :D ) I think the picture frame in the background is slightly distracting, maybe if it were edited or cropped out it could be a little better.

Thanks so much for your critique, Brandon!! i think i understand what you mean about her eyes being crazy looking! LOL! Yep...they are to me too...never saw a cat with golden eyes before! agree about that picture frame. i guess i will have to try my hand at cloning it out. thanks again! :)

Wow what a lovely shot. The eyes are just fantastic. Nice detail in the fur too. I agree the background is a tad distracting (not major)and I think the frame is just a little heavy. All in all though a lovely capture. Cheers Helenx

I like the framing, focus, and even the expression. Very sharp for handheld at 1/30. You do need to clone out the window in the background. That is a distraction and my eyes were drawn straight to it. The desat works well as it is subtle and this photo to me is more 'balanced' than your last one (taking a quote from John)

I think this would have worked just as well in colour. I feel the sheen of the cat's fur may have been more evident. The background is a touch distracting but I am well aware cats do their own thing and it is difficult to photograph them.

thanks so much, David, for your feedback. i agree about the background. not sure what to do about that though other than clone it out. it is very hard to take pictures of cats...at least for me. :) thanks again, David! :)
