The face of a child of poverty I would guess, or mistreatment, no joy in the eyes. He looks like he is judging the photographer as to what kind of a person this is.

Hi Max, you leave us alone with the question. You let the photo speak. Perhaps the photo gives part of the answer. Probably it is a child worker. Perhaps a street child. Marked from the harsh life. And always we face the same dilemma. They should not work, they should not be on the street, but the best I can do for a shoe shiner is to let him shine my shoes. Karl

Karl I am glad you looked and that the picture made you ask questions and I don't disagree with your comment - but this is not the place (as Sheena most definately will say) if I give in to the temptation ;o) Cheers. ;o)-max-

Hi Max, I am interested to get a feedback on the emotions a photo creates for the viewer, not just on technical details. This kind of comments helps me to see whether a photo has the effect I am looking for. Technique is an instrument, not the aim. A way to give feedback on photos which strike my emotions is to tell what goes through my mind, when I see the photo. But sometimes it happened, that such comments were well appreciated by the photographer and later disappeared by wizard's hand. I like tightrope walk. Karl

Photograph is absolutely amazing, makes you think who is he, what is he doing, where he lives. You just keep looking at him. Yet this white frame is extremely distracting for me, IMHO it would be better without it at all!

Welcome Marek - your first critiue, and a tough one at that ;o) I'm glad you like the image, sorry about the frame, many don't like the white matt, but some of us do. Looking forward to viewing your images one day. ;o)-max-

Fabulous!
Unlike grown ups kids do not hide they character and emotions. Well, they do of course, but still they're much more open.
I keep wondering, why his eyes are not young accordingly to his age. Serious boy and yet the presense of childhood is incredibly strong. Must be that kind of life there. Struggling and having fun at the same time.
Very good accent of the light on the face, without touching too much around. Just as good as DOF. Very well done.
I absolutely love such images. They're true and simple.
I'm not sure that I agree 100% about the hood in the upper right corner.
Still, it does not make this image any less :)
Cheers!

Some people, kids and grown ups just have something that works in pictures and engages us, what it is and why it's like that I don't know. Glad you like it Ilja. ;o)-max-

Absolutely fantastic portrait. The boy looks like he has much more life experience than he should have at his age! Very strong portrait! Technically very strong as well!

Simple and strong. I really like the thight crop causing the face to to fill the entire picture. I also appriciate the hood which creates both an interesting line in your picture and a frame for the face. The shot is very dark but that works out very well here. Nice work!

It's never bothered me with cropping chins or the top of the head, to me it feels natural and makes sence to me, always done it this way. I see in your portfolio, you do some face cropping too ;o)Cheers Dominik. ;o)-max-

Nicely done Max. Great tones, good framing of the face, although I do think you could crop part of the left side. I find the area outside the hood to be a bit distracting. Good eye contact with the viewer. Refreshingly natural without the intrusive post processing work that seems to be a fad as of late.

I think the canvas hood soften the expression, but you may be right it distracts somewhat. Cheers David. ;o)-max-
