Steve the photo isn't bad but it lacks several factors to make it interesting and exciting. The setting has no Visual beauty and is very monotone. While this can sometimes create a very nice effect, it has not in the case of your picture. You may wish to photograph it maybe at another angle that incorporates another factor. In this case it would be a log that is maybe broken in half to reveal a splintered edge which is very contrasting in a case like this and adds to the beauty of the picture.
