Hello Wei. The 85mm f/1.8 on the rebel is a very sweet and sharp lens. It seems that because the Rebels sensor chip is smaller than 35mm, it only uses the "sweet center part of the lens and therefore, especially at small apertures from f8 to f12 the focus is particularly sharp. Now I just purchased a Canon 20D which has a comparably small chip like that of the Rebel. I am hoping for similar results. Thanks for your very good comment and thanks for the good work you submit. I know you are relatively new to Photosig, but I can see you have a good style. Best Regars, Michael.

Hey Michael, I have tried again and again, to get some good documentary photos. As I have posted nothing of any repute, I am pretty impressed. The light must have been perfect. And of course, the subject complied, but given he (or she) was advertising, I'm not surprised. This has excellent colors. But the sharpness is really to be admired. What kills me is the supreme control over the DOF. Did you have time to calculate the correct f stop to get this, or did you just shoot like hell and hope for the best? The DOF is perfect here. It is an excellent exampl of how to get the right background for the subject matter. Naturally, I like your colors too, but there is a lot more here than meets the eye. Good work.

Thank you Martin for your very kind remakrs. I would like to take all the credit for this shot, but in all honesty, I did do some fine tuning in Photoshop to accentuate the shallowness of the dof. The sharpness, however, that you pointed out is all lens at F/8.0.... really much further down than I really needed to go. I have done quite a bit of experimenting with this lens, since having taken this shot, and have found that I could have achieved similar sharpness at F/4.0 to F/5.6 and substantially increased the shallowness of the dof. Thanks for your very fine comment. Best Regards, Michael.

Funny amusing thing this yours, Michael, which is able to transmit the "crazy" atmosphere of some moments of special holyday.
I like specially, here, the tidyness, and your cleverness taking this "guy" in the perfectly right pose.
Surely a nice image, able to make smile. Ciao!

The color and detail are excellent. There appear to be two specific areas of focus; the entire vertical plane of the subject which is entirely focused, and the background which very evenly has a slight blur. Having spent many years in upstate NY, I had forgotten that Scranton had a large population of Irish coal miners.

Thank you very much for the kind word Keith. However you should know that on St Pats Day, everyone in Scranton is Irish. Best Regards, Michael.

Ah the Red Baron on St Patty's day. The red and the green makes a good contrast and I love the clarity very sharp. Keep it up

Hi Hank. It was certainly a festive parade. Not only did we have the Red Baron but we also had the Crazy Chicken and the Outdoor Bathtub Man. Lots of color and lots of fun. Best Regards, Michael.

Crystal clear, Michael. It's a beautiful shot! When I ask members for sharpness this is what I'm talking about. And the colors are fabulous...very well seen.

Glad you didn't go too shallow on the depth of field here because I feel the crowd adds to the festive spirit of this without taking away from the subject. I'd like to drool more praise but will just let my rating speak for itself. Good job!

Hi Andrew. Very good hearing from you and I really appreciate this review, especially for the reason you just mentioned. It is really tempting NOT to stop down with this lens. At f4 you can create shallow dof that would pop the socks of you.....and it seems that everyone here loves that shallow dof with the fuzzy background......And if your background has lots of people or things it, you are criticized for having too much clutter. But when I saw this scene, I just wanted to get it all in and took it to F8 which is amazingly sharp and really does a number saturating colors. Best Regards, As always, Michael.

Well Michael for these types of photos (where you really do not have much control of the subject or the lighting) I really feel this one turned out just perfectly. I simple love the exposure as the whites look just perfect and not blown out. Awesome clarity as well. Thanks for sharing.

That Canon 85mm f1.8 lens sure looks great. Will have to look into perhaps picking that one up one day.

Thanks Richard. I am just now getting the hang of using this lens. I am finding out you do not have to stop down as much to get a sharp focus as you do with other prime lenses. This lens seems to be an excellent value. Thanks for your very kind words. Best Regards, Michael.
