What an incredible shot. I know how difficult it is to get that type of shot of such a magnificent bird. The movement of the wings make the shot. Well done.

Hi John, Thanks for the kind comments! Yes, getting sharp flight shots is extremely difficult (dare I say "particularly with a 20D"?). In this case, I was probably more lucky than good, but I'll take it. It's a bit too bad that the wings are cropped off, but as I was trying to keep the center focus point on the owl's face, there was just no way to fit the full bird in the frame. Stil, I'm very pleased with sense the dynamic motion that this image gives.

Thank you for the very kind words, Frank. I know how I could improve it: not clip the ^%$# wings next time! ;-) That's really hard not to do when the owl is taking off...

Wow, what an awesome shot. Technically it is superb. The head is tack sharp, the exposure is spot on, the wings have nice motion blur making the photo quite dynamic, and the background is sweet too, with colors that complement the owl and just the right blur. It is a little bit odd how there's just the one eye in the middle of the face due to the owl looking sideways. It would have been real nice had the owl been looking at the lens. But hey, I realize this isn't the family dog where you can just whistle to get its attention. Congratulations on a great photo. Regards, Arie.

Thanks for the words of praise, Arie... Shooting birds in flight is extremely challenging, but quite fun. The GGOs in my area are completely oblivious to human presences, so it is quite impossible to attrack their attention. I agree that seeing the other eye would have been awesome.

Terrific shot, Rob! Congratulations! I was out there on Monday and after trying it myself, I must say you guys are pretty incredible. To sit and watch a bird for LONG times, just waiting for it to do something (like fly, or smile, or whatever) take more patience than I have. I must have watched one owl for 30 minutes and it never did more than look at all the photographers around. And then I turned away for a moment... just a moment, and that's when it flew off. You really deserve a pat on the back for this great photo! This is a LOT tougher to get than one of the bird just sitting there. Cheers!

Hi Eldor! Cool "seeing you" around PhotoSig! Thanks for the kind feedback.
Yes, taking flight shots like this requires a lot of patience and a ton of concentration - you need to keep your eye glued to the shutter for long periods of time, and then be ready to fire off a series of pictures in a blink of an eye... and then hope that your 20D is focusing properly. The 20D seems to have problems with AI Servo focus tracking when the subject is coming directly towards the camera, which explain whey I have a ton of perfectly sharp flight pictures of an owl's butt-end, but very few with the face in sharp focus ;-) )

Not having seen your other shots, I would agree that this would be your best. You can't get much better than this. I am amazed at the length of these majestic birds legs! You have framed this very well. The head and eyes are sharp and you still have movement in the wings. This is obviously cropped and I'm wondering what you have cropped from the original? I also think the copyright is very distracting as others have mentioned. Great shot!
Regards,
David.

Thank you for the great feedback. The image was only cropped from the left, not at all from the top or bottom. It is very difficult to properly fill the frame when these owls are flying, as their wingspan is huge.

this is an amazing photo!!!! perfect timing, sharpness and composition.
Peope should be ashamed at themselves for giving you one less thumb for your copyright....how immature. If they have a problem with it, them can tell you in the critique...it does not take away from the perfection of the photo.....and i don't blame you for the copyright at all.....ripping is out of control at this point. I can't believe people are so blinded on this site.....if it was a mediocre picture of a girl with large breasts they would not deduct of the symbol. anyway, fantastic pic.

Exelent photo, never knew owls had such long legs :D
Technicly the shot is very good, the cropping doesnt bother much... the copyright does, thats a real shame.

Bob, thanks for the critique... The owl's legs are surprisingly long. This was the best crop I could do, as the image is "full-frame" from top to bottom. With their wings held up and their legs outstretched like that, the owls covery probably 30-36 inches, making it very difficult to fit them into the frame. As for the copyright, I simply did not feel comfortable in putting what I feel is a special 700x700 pixel image out there without at least some type of watermark... I guess I could have made it smaller, but then I've been seeing many images being stolen recently.

Thank you for the kind words. I'm happy that I can witness the invasion, as it's very special. But the owls do this when they run out of food in their normal habitat, so I'm not happy about that for the owls. Many have died and will continue to die because of the distance they've had to travel to find food.

This is one awsome owl shot. I love the crop and the composition. You would have a big 3 tU from me if not for your copyright sign in the middle of the shot that takes us almost a third of the frame, making in look like an European anti-nicotine campaign. Regards, Michal

Thanks for the critique, Michal... It would have been nice to be judged on the picture itself, rather than on the copyright. The copyright should not take away from the image, but that's just my opinion, of course.

Most everything has been covered that I was going to say but I do think the crop could have been different, specifically, by less of a crop on the bottom, left side and top. The right side at the wing doesnt bother me but the severe crop to the other wing (top) seems too drastic. I dont think it needs to come out much more, though. On a side note, I can certainly appreciate how difficult it is to get a bird in flight to be perfectly framed. You do fine work!

Thank you for the input. The picture is full-frame top-to-bottom, the picture was only cropped from the left side. It is extremely difficult to fit these birds in the frame as they're taking off, because of the lenght of their wings and legs.

Nice capture if a decisive moment, the crop is too tight chopping off wing feathers. DOF does not include the flight feathers, otherwise a 3TU...Great capture, regards Don

Thanks for the feedback, Don. DOF is a difficult thing to master with birds in flight, particularly in poor light, as this was... More DOF means longer shutter speeds, which means motion blurr. This is always a tricky compromise, as I'm sure you know.

Rob

I love owls they are beautiful creatures. You captured this owl with beautiful wingspan. I love the movement of the wings and the detail of the feathers. I also love the eye; the other eye must be hiding or something. Overall, nice capture especially of movement.

Thank you for the input, Nancy! Getting good flight shots of these guys is really difficult... Between good focusing at the right spot, good sharpness and sufficient DOF, good framing and composiion, let me say that the vast majority of flight shots get deleted, as many things can go wrong!

Hi Robert, I love the detail on the head and eye , wonderfully sharp. Really like the motion blur to the wings also. A very good capture of an Owl in flght. I love the flight action . I love the detail. I don't even mind the cropping of the wings .Please , please get rid of the copyright text. If your worried about visitors stealing your images , then post them in the lowest quality you can get away with. The text is really distracting from an otherwise fantastic action photo. Many regards Mark.
