I was inspired by a photo posted the other day and thought I would give it a try. I used only available light from a lamp. I was lucky to take this, my wife usually isn't so cooporative. I must say that I am impressed with the 20D at high ISOs. Anyway, thanks for looking. Please check out my album...Dean

There is something hypnotic about the image. Nice work.

There is a lot of unreached potential here, I feel. This is a much used approach, a fairly common shot, & as you say you have seen it on here before. This version however, is lacking something.

Firstly, there is what seems to be a very dark blue strip in the bottom 1, 1.5cm of the frame. I can't see exactly what it is - perhaps another fabric, perhaps the remains of an experiment with the blue channel? It's very hard to say, but whatever caused it, it does distract from the shot.

Secondly there's the eyes. The blue channel certainly has been adjusted there, as we see the veins in the eyes are a tint of purple, where as they should be red, and the eyes are overly blue. It seems also as if the brightness has been adjusted, as it is not in keeping with the rest of the image.

I think the left eye of this shot [where the 'target' falls] is a good, sharp eye, and is what you are looking for here. That shot also has its flaws [the fake skin, the perspective] however is a good compraison in terms of the eye.

Most of the little skin we see here is nice and warm, however the forhead is verging on red and is not too nice.

Another flaw I feel is the hair. The hairs on the very right seem sharp, but the ones in the middle and left are certainly not. I would also like not to see the dangling hair from the top.

Matt

You have a good shot here. She looks very pretty, and I have to give points for originality, but the photo maybe could have been cropped a little more on the bottom.

Her eyes are gorgeous and I am drawn right to them. Part of that I bet is the dark cloak. I dont think its my computer monitor because this is the only one Ive seen with this but it seems like her forehead is a bright yellow surrounded by red (from flash??) and her hair has the slightest tinge of green to it. The way you have her eyes positioned in the photo the eyes are the first thing that is seen and you have to force your gaze to even go anywhere else to see the rest of it.

excellent job... Look at www.neatimage.com for a program that does an excellent job of smoothing skin. I use it here at my studio... Ron

Thanks Ron, I have neat image and use it to get rid of noise. I did use a tiny bit of guasian blur, except on the eyes. I kept the skin like this...Dean

Hi Dean and wife ;), This picture looks awesome, I really like the color combination Blue/greeny eyes + black surrounding + part of her face. And the fact that your wife has beautifull eyes makes the picture looking very well :). Greetings from Holland.

You're impressed? Well so am I, Dean! I hate to sound like The Big Bad Wolf but what lovely eyes your wife has. They come through with stunning clarity, especially the color, enveloped in this black fabric.

My only bone of contention may be that she's not looking dirctly into the lens. Or at least doesn't seem to be from my perspective.

this one really catched my attention.
i love seeing those beautifull eyes and the hood frame is really something.
the problem is only with the skin-tone, i hope you try again probably without the hair only the eyes.
Cheers

I like this shot, and not only because I have the same camera. The black of the material really frames your wifes faces well, the contrast is great. the small amount of hair adds a little interest also. and makes the shot less formal IMHO. The eyes are look really nice, the blueish cast helps to soften them in the shot. Reminds me of a fremen maiden from the film "DUNE" Nice shot.

Dean, this is a pretty good attempt but it really hasn't paid off.
There is a blue cast in her eye's where IMHO it should be white.
The skin tone (for me) is too orange.
The shadow around her right eye looks kind of weird and un-natural.

Perhaps, an improvement could be made utilizing the curve command in photoshop but I think a reshoot useing natural light would be far better.

Your wife has lovelly eye's and they really stand out against the black surround. Before the next shoot, surprise her with a bunch of her favourite flowers or something you know will make her more amically disposed to being photographed :-}

This is a very nice attempt! You have some excellent comments from other critics. I would like to add that you may want to tackle the fold of the fabric, it looks kind of "hard" to me, disturbing the overall harmony of the portrait.

If you or your wife don't mind some postproduction to smoothen the skin, do drop me a mail about such technique.

Hope this helps.

Hi Güven and anyone who is interested to know, the technique is pretty simple and straightforward.

1 - Use the Gaussian Blur plug-in,

  • Filter - Gaussian Blur - and use 8% as the radius. If the problem is more serious you could apply a little more. Now we just settle at 8%.

2 - Click on the History Brush on the tool box

  • Now press the History tab and click on the small right arrow.
  • Click History Options then select Allow Non-Linear History
  • Still in History, create a snapshot by clicking on the icon which looks like a camera.

3 - You should see a new layer in History

  • click on the box on the left of the layer. You may want to rename it to "blur" or "after effect" by double clicking it and type the new name.

4 - Still in History

  • click on the original layer, not the box on the left but on the layer. You can see now the image has returned to the one before any editing.

5 - Now we can begin smoothening the skin.

  • click on history brush on tools and set the opacity to 30-40%, you could increase and decrease depending on the situation. A higher number will create a softer effect. Please make sure that mode blend is in Normal.
  • Choose a soft brush and remember to press the airbrush icon
  • Adjust the brush size accordingly. Just press the "[" and "]" symbol on the keyboard.
  • Now you can begin brushing the area which you want to smoothen, just increase/decrease the opacity should you want a stronger or lighter effect.
  • Careful with the edges of the image as well as on the eyes area.

There you have it!

Happy brushing!

Dean, for me, lamp lights did not work. If your wife is cooperative one more time, try with natural window light. If neccessary with tripod, arrange your settings then call her for several shots, some with black, some red and green veils, mostly eye contact and some looking down. I am sure those will be better. PS.pls if done send me an e-mail. Regards. Güven.

Dean: You have done a great job capturing her eyes. The sparkle is very nicely captured. Here are some picky observations that I think can further enhance this image. 1) try to push the veil texture a little more, if not it looks like dead space. 2) Clone out the red veins in her eyes since they detract from the overall effect. 3) The hair crosses the right eye, clone this out as well. I told you I was picky, but I think the end product will be worth the effort. Ray

You have captured the colouring of her eyes beautifully. The colour of the skin seems to be reddish with a strong shift to yellow in the highlights, which appears like digital colour shifts. The hair has a noticeable green hue to it. The light source looks soft enough, but the appearance of the skin seems somewhat harsh from a contrast perspective.

The stare of the eyes is quite striking, and would be really well helped along with beautifully soft natural skin colours. The framing and crop work quite nicely.

Thanks for sharing. Peter

She has killer eyes, soften the light so no glare, would be superb, nice shot as is.
