Smoke Rising and circling in my fireplace. decided to have a go at taking a few pictures of smoke. i was unable to light from the side, i tried with several torches including one of these 1,000,000 candle power ... who bothered to count?. anyway that didnt work so just tried the on camera flash and the results were not brilliant but the best i have acchieved. this is one of my favorites. possibly a bit out of focus, or maybe the shutter speed wasnt fast enough, no tripod used either...

Nice colours anyway. i liked the half and half b+w type thing.. bit of a cliché shot but just trying things out as a newbie.

Love this one too! You are good with this type of photography Dave. This is very interesting and makes my eyes want to folow the path of the smoke. Great job! The only suggestion I might make would be to crop away some of the black. Over all this pic is excellant!

hi Dave,
This is a shot that seems to come around a few times. I always have liked how smoke looks as it disperses. Yours is very smooth and very nice. I do not like the DOF tho.. THe back ground smoke is a bit too blurred for me. It should be more like that of the front. The crop leaves too little too much. It would be nice if a motion was implied but with the crop you have it is too tight for this, making it more of just dead space. All in all I like it. Thanks for sharing.

I like it (Smoke) but photo is technically bad. Please look in to my portfolio. You must work a lot, by camera and by PhotoShop :-). I wish you many good critiques. Regards Piotr

Thank you Piotr

Iooking at your portfolio i think it was these pics, especialy the one of the star, and the one that has been harshly rated as computer generated that made me want to experiment with this.

I used a semi matt A4 ring binder as my black background and shot from about 10-20 cm from the smoke, using rolled up newspaper. have seen how you shot yours and might try again with a better set up and spend a bit more time.

photoshop was just used for the levels and cropping, and a bit of nose, which my camera produces plenty of. will have a play with incence sticks next time as it seems you have managed to manipulate the path of the smoke this way? maybe not but sounds like something to try.

Thanks for the commets. _ Dave

work, work and one more work. PhotoShop to delete salt&pepper (small points) and contrast balance - thats all.

The framing is perfect, there is a wonderfull sense of motion. It is a a very complicated photograph for such a simple subject matter. The brightness - contrast works. I like this a lot. -Paul
