I have actually hunted a shot of a dragonfly for some time at different lakes but haven't got any shots that I was satisfied with yet. Then I was visiting a friend this weekend and we heard that there was a woodpecker in the neighbourhood and went out to chase that when this fellow came along. Unfortunally we didn't get any shots of the woodpecker, but I think we got a nice one of this Southern Hawker Dragonfly (Aeschna cyanea) female.

What a great example of nature's camouflage! The dragonfly's colours are wonderfully vivid yet they mimic the colours around them. A hunter would be jealous at the excellence of this dragonfly's dress.

You've managed to get such a nice, sharp focus on the dragonfly which shows the almost "plastic" texture of its body and head. The sheen of the body helps it stand out from the more matte texture of its surroundings. Your DOF also helps it to stand out. I like the way the dragonfly has been captured diagonally across the picture as well. Overall the lighting is very good, allowing both the dragonfly and its surroundings to be seen in detail. The only area in which I wish there were more detail is in the upper right where the wings are unfortunately too dark to stand out against the equally dark portion between the green leaves. Otherwise this is certainly a beautifully composed and presented photograph. Nicely done.

A very nice macro image, I like the diagonal composition, but I've got an idea that the green dragonfly is not eye-catching as expected on the green background...and I know that we always have very limited choice on this ~

Hi Thomas, I agree with the two other critiques concerning both their compliments as their advices. I would like to add to this that acccording to me the thing that makes a dragonfly special is its wings. In this photograph they are just vaguely visible. But how to solve this... maybe by using a soft indirect flash?

What regards the dragonfly itself in this picture is excellent as far as I understand: the light, sharpness, colours. What may, on the other hand, fail this, if I may say so, could be the background which, being in the same colour range as the fly, interferes, so to say, with the main subject somehow. It is however a very well done macro with great picture quality. OMHO. Regards.

Hi Thomas, nice and sharp photo from this dragonfly. He is sharp from top to tail. The colors are nice, altough the photo is a bit dark. I see you have the same problems to get these insect on a solitaire position (see my dragonflies). The dark frame works good in this composition.
Best regards, gerard
