On Tel Aviv’s promenade by the sea in autumn season this old lady was feeding the pigeons with bread crumbs. Thanks for your time and critiques. Rafi

This picture is very strange to me, it is obviously flawed at a first sight, the high contrast and the oversaturated colours are the signs of a badly exposed or scanned photo but, after some time spent watching it, it is amazing and very attractive. The light is so beautifully strong that everything else seems to stand still, paralized. The expression of the old lady, still readable in the shadows, increases this sensation.

I think the harsh light, and oversaturated colors work quite well for this image, as they really draw out the texture of her skin. The fact that her face is in shadow works as well, as it lets me concentrate on her overall form, which evokes age so well. This picture very successfully creates a mood and a story.

The image lacks sharpness overall - greater sharpness of the birds and the woman would complement the harshness and color. Although the people in the background are very blurry, they still detract from the image; if she were much more alone, it would be more compelling. I don't see why she's just right of center; if there's a reason for that, I'd love to hear it.

Well Rob, there was no reason to place the lady just in the middle, I usually don’t do that. The picture isn’t a snapshot but the situation was a very dynamic one, the lady was moving slowly from one place to another the pigeons where flying to her and away again and I couldn’t move my tripod fast enough in order to change position and exclude the figures in the background from the frame. I could clone them out but I don’t do that either so this is the best I have of that moment.
