I truly adore this photograph. Amazing focus, and great attention to detail. I particularly love how you can see ever strand of this hornet's fur, the 'felt-like' texture to it's eyes, and how one can witness it's vulnerability while feeding. Very well done.

Mark, The composition and POV is excellent with colours well saturated and light used to optimum. The placement of the hornet's head on the rule of thirds makes the picture and the focus is pinsharp. Very good DOF achieved. This is absolutely beautifully done. Regards, Herman

The frame, colors, contrast and bee angel is perfect.

sorry that you can't the 3 points, that I want give you - a boring rule (Non-conforming (rating)) says, that you didn't get the points when I only give points for best or bad pictures. The 15 words barrier is the reason, that most the time I didn't say anything to pictures for that I didn't have more than 5 words.

Hey Mark,
I've looked at this photo so many times since I joined photosig and when I got stung by one of these critters last week I thought of your photo and decided I'd give it a critique when I got back online!
My usual process of critiquing is to write the text then evaluate it to give the TUs or TDs, with this one I'm in no doubt about it, its getting 3TUs.
The shot is just stunning. So much detail and sharpness right where we want it, great job merging the two images to get it like this. The crop is unusual and this is why it stands head and shoulders above most other macro shots I've seen. I think its the legs subtly blurred between the head and left edge of frame that allows you to go so off centre but keep it so well balanced.
The colours are spot on, no distractions on the fruit or in the background to take our attention from his nasty looks facial features.
The sting doesn't hurt so much now by the way, but thanks for letting me see a close up of the offending creature.
Stu

Incredible but IMHO you should have been looking at the hornet from a slightly higher position so that most of hte foreground is cut out, or at the very least is not blocking the mouth of hte hornet.

I have a bee also. When we got him, I thought, wow, what a good opportunity to take some bee's pictures. Oh, well! It is easier to take close-ups in nature than make a sound photo of a bee at home. Here we see exceptionally good capture, both technically and emotionally. Picture tells a story. Bee has his/her nails out from paws showing real handling of a camera. I would give 5TU.

this is a really impressive shoot and it becomes unbelievable if I take in acount the equipment you used. Anyway if I can give you a personal suggestion, probably the light is too high in the middle-upper area of the photo. A double light beside the lens could give better results.

Thanx for the kind comments. This was not a studio shot. I took in at ground level (thanx to that flip out lcd) under a pear tree in my backyard. I was a bit nervous as there was a lot of fruit on the grounds and the bees, hornets, and wasps were swarming all around me. The image is, however, a composite of two frames taken in succession in an effort to increase DOF.

it is great art, mark! clearness is irreproachable, one has the impression especially on the level of the antennas to see the animal in 3d, the color is splendid and the depth of field is very well carried out with the blur which accompanies it behind plane. cheer!

Fantastic detail and precision here in this photo. And like the rest of your portfolio, I can tell you take great time to set up the shot and processing it. I'd definitely give it the 3TU's but I'm at my limit. Everything in this image is so crisp and sharp, very refreshing. Thanks for sharing.

I love the yellow on the bottom of the image as well as on the insect, and the antenna (spelling?!?!) is perfectly positioned going off to the left... sharpness is incredible! xXxXx

Normally, I don't even like to glance at macro shots of insects because they creep me out so badly.. But THIS is STUNNING! And it is a composite?? Double WOW! Not only did I glance, but I studied, squinted, and stared. The DOF, the color, the PS work. Simply amazing. Wish I could give you more than 3TU!

how unhelpful this may be, the fact is that there is nothing wrong to state about this photo.
The color is excellent, the DOF is absolutely perfect. The way you made this composed by two photos to get the desired effect underlines the amazing photo.
Perfection really is a word that should be used abundantly with this photo!

Congratulations on a fantastic photograph. The eyes of the insect are in focus and present incredible detail. The saturation of the colurs are perfect. What makes this even more incredible is that this photo was taken with a Canon G3 and not a high end Digital SLR with the most expensive lens money can buy. The DOF is excellent highlighting the subject.

Let me start with this: a benefaction to experience a picture like this superseding all the "full frontal flesh"-pictures recently top ranking the "most viewed"-lists!
And this is not the only one, but what made me wonder even more was a letter to the editor I read a few days ago in a foto magazine (if I remember right, it was a nature-foto-magazine, "Africa Geographic" or something), where the author of the letter was complaining of too few invertebrates being the cover animal of the magazine. The editor had answered this letter and explaining, that starring these little animals on the cover always had resulted in desastrous sales figures.
Regarding the picture itself: feeler are cropped! It´s a composition (by the way: how and what has [it] been composed here exactly? I would like very much to know!) and yet it´s simply perfect.
All the yellow hues add to a piece of very great art!
Wunderbar!

mark.. could you explain what is composite of two images. Did you super impose two images. It is good to have fruit trees around. I had fig trees invaded by Japanese beetles, and had got a couple of good shots. However due to sunlight, there was shadow cast on his eyes. This is a beautiful shot, specially the best time to catch these guys are when they are feeding, that way they don't move around. Alternatively i assume you would cut or prune the branch where the fruit is, and bring it or put it in a bright lighting area. I did that with the japanese beetle case. Otherwise there is very inadequate lighting when trying to shoot the insect on the tree itself.
Remarkable work here.. Remember Mark.. 1/5th of the world's animal/plant species are Beetles, which means there are about 300,000 species of Beetles on this planet. Do you happen to have any Japanese beetle shots..

Ok la foto é fantastica sotto tutti gli aspetti, ma ora c'è qualche anima pia che mi spiega dettagliatamente come farne una "simile"?
Credo farebbe comodo a molti.
In particolare come si incrementa il DOF con 2 immagini?
Credo di possedere il giusto equipaggiamento ma non ho le conoscenze adeguate.
Mi scuso per la richiesta all'interno di una critica (anche perchè c'è poco da criticare)!

Hi Mark. Excelent picture you have here. Sharpnes and details are briliant. Nothing to change on the picture. I can not see the points of composition of these two layers, great PS work. I pictured the wasp so many times and I spent few hours trying to get such point of view. Please say how many hours did you wait. How did you get the wasp to stand so still to take few pictures with different focus points with same position. I had so many problems, my wasps were circeling around one part of the fish and cutting small parts, but that circeling was inpossible to take. Inposible to have such wiev. Also, the wasp puted her head deap in to the fish she was eating, so my pictures were great but without head. I think maybe greap (orange an lemon mix) whould be my next try. Damir

Thanx for the kind words. I have a several fruit trees in my yard. I could go out right now and the bugs are there - it is that time of year. I took several dozen shots to get this one (actually 2 because of the compositing), although there are others in the bunch that will probably be this good. THus, it took maybe 2-3 hours spread over as many days. However, this is my third year of doing this, so I know exactly what I wanted and needed to do (for example, see this similar shot which was snapped last year, but not developed till january). In other words, I have spend countless hours accumulating the experience needed for this shot.
I agree about it being difficult to do though. In this case, I was having a problem with her sticking her head deep in the fruit. I was trying to wait for her to take a breather and lift her head, but she was't so cooperative. At least she had her attenna spread out over the head rather than flopped down in front of it.

Hi Mark,
"Artistically and technically flawless" as usual. I like the "graphical" appearance here with almost only black and yellow with some brown on both whasp and pear. I like the soft light that generally appears in your pictures. How is your flash set up? Diffusor, bouncing, reduced power, multiple. etc.?

Mark,
I think this shot is absolutely perfect. It shows great skill with a camera and with Photoshop. Even if the shot was not this good I would give you 3TU for having the balls to get this close to the hornet!

this is quite possibly your best image in your portfolio. I don't think i would change anything, although i do agre with other posters that maybe the eyes could be more lit up. Someone mentioned that the shot was too yellow--but i wonder if the fruit had been a different colour, whether this would have improved or ruined the shot? Its too bad this DOF was accomplish with composite shots, only because it means that i definitely won't be able to achieve quality like this (i only use film, and am not competent with photoshop even if i had digital files of my shots...). Could you post the original head-focus shot, so that we could see how blurry the back would have been?

Thanx for the kind words. I agree about the eyes. As for not being able to achieve quality like this with film, I am not so sure. THe "original head-focus shot" is essentially what you see. I added the antenna from a second shot taken a split second later (literally numbered consecutively in the camera). The limited DOF will not allow me to get both the antenna and eyes in focus at this magnification, so I took a shot with the eyes in focus and one with the antenna in focus and then added the good antenna to the main shot.

What can I say on a so great photo.....
Well, i'm a beguiner. I have an old uncle that tell me lots of things about photos because he allways like it.
Some day maybe I will do something so great like this one. I Will try.
Thecn. speaking, I think if you use less f you will have a more big profundity of focus, and you will take more details of the incrid. thinks that are on all macro photo.
Cogratulations, and thanks for your sharing, with all of us, our interesting and great work!!!

Incredible detail and colour. The colour scheme, yellow and black, is just stunning. The yellow background, and the yellow pear it's eating adds very much to the picture. However, the eyes, which are play a major role in the picture, do lack something. They are just too dark. They could do with a bit more reflection.

Mark, you've shown us some incrsdible macro shots over the years, this has to be amongst your best. The technique of combining two shots worked out flawlessly. The colors are superb and it is presented very nicely.

stunning photo! just like most of your shots they are near perfection. Some things to consider on this one are the right (from the insects point of views) antenna is cut off .. it would have been nice to keep the end in the picture as the other is cut and the insect is off cetnered (which looks good).
There seems to be too much yellow ... insect, food, background ... all yellow ... there may be even a yellow cast ... not sure though ....
lastly there is some noise, or looks like not enough colors for the gradients in the background.
Dont get me wrong .... these are small observations in a great photo!

Mark, I like this photo very much. The subject is very sharp and detail. The DOF is great. Do you have using Marco flash to take this photo? Would you please to tell me how to connect Pentax 50mm to Canon G3? I just look all your photo and all are great! Hoping see you new photo soon~~~ ^^

Oh dear oh dear. It's that Plonsky bloke again with a perfect example of how macros should be done. There aren't many people on Photosig who can produce work of this kind to this standard. You lead. We'll follow.
Oh yeah, and for the record, I love the off centre composition. Best Regards - iso

Beautiful macro shot! I like the colors and the details. Combinning two makes DOF look good. Off-center composition is clever too. Very nice!

yes! That works. I should try myself more exposures to increase DOF. Can you say little bit how you do it technicaly? You have special tripod mount? How do you deal with movement of insect? Do you get closer with 1.4 lens than 1.8 reversed? thanks

I have an article on technique. These images were handheld. As for movement, the bug is reasonably stationary while eating and I take a lot of shots. The only difference between the 1.4 and 1.8 is how much light gets in. You cannot get any closer with one than the other, but you are more likely to get vignetting (blackened corners or worse still, a black circle around the image) with the 1.8 than the 1.4.

One of your best yet (and that is a statement that carries some weight)! There may be some who cry "foul" when using two images through photoshop, but I think that it works brilliantly well. Excellent colors and great composition!
