As with all wildlife (mostly animals...) you are at the mercy of the whims of the subject. You can't get those ideal shots all the time. So I guess those Nat-Geo photographers really do earn their money.
The lack of light on this side of the birds really hurts the shot. Especially as the two run together. Also you have a less than appealing surface to the water. Overall the shot of the birds in the air is good, good timing, good form, they seem sharp. Perhaps cropping just below the wings will help with the water issues. The lighting... hmmm... change sides of the lake?
