I love the look on his face, and think you did a great job capturing it! The DOF works very well, showing the bars are there, but not focusing on them at all, and having that one eye centered between two bars.
That said, I think it would look a lot better if the bars were vertical, and there was more light on his other side to bring out his beautiful color.
