Last month's assignment dealt with man-made structures. For November, let's look at natural structures, those things that are shaped by forces of nature. On a large scale we have bridges, arches, hoodoos and the like, sculpted by wind or water. In the US there is a national park dedicated to these (Arches N. P.), and state parks in Kentucky and Virginia (at least). Hoodoos are found in the western US, Canadian Rocky Mountains, and (according to Wikipedia) in Serbia, Taiwan, and Turkey. On a smaller scale we find crystal structures in quartz, diamond, and water frozen under the right conditions. Some of these have structures visible to the naked eye or camera, no need to borrow your neighbor's scanning electron microscope. However, should you be equipped for photomicrography, you can find very small examples of natural structures. Some structures, such as corals, are formed by addition rather than wear. And some structures are results of natural forces a long time ago. Island atolls formed by coral building on top of extinct volcanoes come to mind. So do smooth boulders and rocks worn down by wind and water flow. So think about structures that result from forces of nature, whether through wear, growth, or accumulation. And don't submit photos of manmade objects because they look like natural structures.
