Assignment: 2008 05 ~ Textures in Nature

Submit a new photo

This assignment is based on a suggestion from keifer/Keith. Textures in nature can be challenging because they are revealed by a combination of their shapes in typically small scale and raking ambient light. Finding this combination, or managing it with portable light, is the start of the challenge; appropriate processing can enhance or obscure the textures present. These textures can be in growing things, such as leaves or bark of trees, or in inanimate objects such as rocks. While textures can appear in other cases, such as manmade objects, or in large scale, such as clouds or geologic formations, this assignment is for smaller scale in nature. This can be macro photography, but the assignment does not require strict macro technique or resulting image size in 1:1 proportion to the subject. If you have not done this kind of photography before, take a look at This Wikipedia article and this one from Shutterbug will inform you about macro work. Here is one on textures and patterns in nature.

So find a texture in nature and make a photo that presents it. Remember that scale is important, and this assignment deals with small scale, not large.

To qualify for this month's assignment,
the photo have a natural texture as its subject,
the scale must be near close-up (achievable by close focus with a normal lens) to macro (achieving a 1:1 scale or better),
your photographer's comment must identify the texture and equipment used to produce it, and
your photographer's comment must contain the words "May Assignment"
