Periodically, the system selects the featured users for the next day or two. (It does this whenever it realizes that it has less than a day's worth of featured users remaining.)
For the featured photographer, it totals up the photo points that each user has received during the past 7 days, then selects the featured photographers (one per hour) from the top 25% of those users. The featured critic is chosen in a similar manner, except that the system uses critique points for the featured critic rather than photo points. Premium members can choose to be notified in advance when they will be featured on the main page. Unfortunately there is a bug in the code which handles these notifications, so it is possible you may receive false notifications. While this is the case, you may disable this particular notification. We hope to fix this in the next release of photoSIG.
