Glossary
Listing of photographic (and SIGrelated) terms and definitions

Part of photography is communication of ideas; it is difficult to critique a photograph that is an attempt at communicating an idea without including the subject in the critique. In doing so, however, you must be careful not to let your agreement or disagreement with the subject or idea influence your critique. A critique is more than simple agreement or disagreement; it is an evaluation of the photograph and how well it succeeds. It is important to recognize that it is not the subject that is being critiqued, but the photograph.

The subject can be an important aspect of the photo, just as the technical details can be. photoSIG does not require that you consider the subject, or prohibit your considering the subject, in your critique. Nor do we tell you how to balance the relative importance of technical aspects, the subject, and other aspects of the photo. We do, however, require that you not show disrespect for photographic subjects, in particular when they are people.

One exception occurs in critiquing a photograph that you find to be offensive or repugnant. This judgment is associated with the subject and its presentation, not technique. Your agreement or disagreement with the idea, or your repugnance, have to do with the subject. For guidance on this case, see How many thumbs should I give?

If you have read this far and this doesn't help you decide how you should deal with the subject in critique of a particular photo, you should not critique it. Just move on and open another photo.
