The Smithsonian is collecting photos for an exhibit Growing Up in the 50s and 60s. It has established a Flickr pool for it.

This is a wonderful idea for several reasons.

First, it's a kind of participatory history collection -- anyone can contribute.

Second, there is the historical documentation, via mostly snapshots, of what the world looked liked in that era.

But there's also the modern day reaction to these photos. Will we see some of these photos, thanks to time and distance, as art?

There's only about 65 photos so far in the Flickr collection. One of my favorites is Mom gettin dad a beer 1956.
