one of the most expensive tool is Adobe CS, and a path to lower the cost is using the upgrade set. Now in order to use an upgrade, you need to have installed a previous allowed version of CS.
One of the methods is to buy a used copy of CS, install that, buy an upgrade version, and lower cost
here is the warning,, Lots of resellers of CS2,3,4, rewrap old copies of previously installed versions of CS, and resell them as full versions. You might pay a couple hundred dollars for these older full versions.
will it install/work on your computer, you betcha, will it register on Adobe - NOPE. What is worse, it goes thru the registration step, and you might even think you are register, but until you log onto Adobe, and confirm that you see your serial number DO NOT BELIEVE IT.
so,, you than get the newer upgrade, try to install, and you will get the message that while an older version of the tool is installed, it is not a valid version for upgrade (because the registration step did not REALLY complete).
so,, pre Verify 100% that the copy has NEVER been installed on any previous user machine prior to buying (essentially Adobe does not allow user transfer of software).
I got my copies resolved, and now up to CS6, but it was a hassle.

It is largely this onerous system that contributes to the fact that most of my friends who have CS have a pirated copy. I have a legit one but could never have afforded it if my wife didn't work at a university.

what got me upset was I was buying copies right from retailers, and had went thru three retailers with pirated copies. Its one thing to get from a friend or such a pirated copy, but even when you pay hard cash for CS3 or 4, most likely they are pirated.
this pirate problem is getting worse, now inks are being targeted. What with a refill pack costing over a hundred dollars, its like pure gold to pirates. I ordered from Amazon (linked to a vendor), and the ink was Chinese Knocknoffs. What gets me mad, is that I still paid close to 90 dollars for fake brand!, they have really gotten good with the markings/packaging.
I am reordering from a major camera store (only 10 dollars difference) for the
real thing. I used to be able to trust Amazon front page selling, but guess not for high end printer ink. Sure wish govt would REALLY go after these counterfieters. Paying so much for junk ink.. or software ... is well a crime.

You guys should try out Costco. They charge only $2.99 for a 12x18, 5.99 for 16x20 and 8.99 for a 20x30. If you don't like the result, they will reprint for you at no cost. You just send the file electronically to them. Then you can pick it up at your neighborhood store at your convenience. Or you can have them sent to you.
I have been doing the 12x18 for all my competition prints. At that price, I can't even buy the inks (real or knock off) alone.
