Hello, when I take 10 peoples away, then there will be no critics anymore. Critics come almost only from the same peoples. There are to much/strong rules in Photosig. It happends also that administrators delete sometimes critics and commends... a Good mandatory rule could be, give 3 critics, then you can place a picture.... Kr, Jan.

I remember when non-paying members one had to earn 15 critique points in order to post a photo. I was sad to see that go.

That sounds like a good idea to me. Why was it dropped? The first problem I can think of is that some people might just do generic critiques without much content, but that happens anyway.

Regarding fewer people critiquing recently, I've been having intermittent problems with the site for the last 36 hours or so. It's been taking ages to connect, yet I have a fast machine and am not having any problems with other sites. Also, when I do get connected, it's taking longer than usual for pages to load. But, as I say, intermittently. I'm wondering if this is keeping some people away. Has anyone else experienced this?....in fact, it's taking longer and longer to navigate between pages at this time of writing so I'll be wandering off for a while and will try again later.

Hi Elise, the page load issue may be an internet traffic issue with your provider, I am not experiencing any difficulties nor am I receiving any reports about connectivity issues. The mandatory critique rule simply didn't work so it was removed. BTW thanks for the great critiques! Great work :-)

Hi Sheena, I'm really relieved to hear that it's not more widespread. Our local provider is a bit iffy. Thanks very much for the compliment. I learn such a lot from getting immersed in other people's photos, but tend to get a bit carried away sometimes :)

Jan, which of these photos has critiques that are more likely to benefit a photographer - this photo or this photo? The first photo has 21 critiques the second has 5 critiques. Our goal is that each photo receive three quality critiques. The rules you would have us do away with would put us back in 2002. Those days are over.

There are not the billions of people new to digital any longer, and those who are interested in critique are looking for meatier more meaningful feedback on their work than "nice shot please see mine".

Who cares what the ratings are on the photos on the main page, who cares the number of critiques. What we should care about is the quality of the critiques and resulting photographs. Given the number of users and the limitations of the software, let's get our priorities straight and make the best of what we've got.

Hello Sheena, in 2002 where more pictures and also more critics. Today only 10 peoples gives critics, sometime one other.. Was 2002 so bad.... (I was member then already..). The most peoples likes good critics, but also ratings.. Also not inviting are the 'blocked' tumbs (4 or 5 years)... Kr, Jan.

"Was 2002 so bad?"

Yes, it was, as far as quality of critiques is concerned - they were mostly meaningless. PhotoSIG is meant to be a critique site, not a rating / point collectors' site.

2002 was a great year for members who loved to get lots of thumbs with no meaningful input.

By todays riules, the first photo doesnt have a single conforming critique, whether by length (15 words) or merit..nothing but a ton of attaboys there with nothing to support them.

The second one at least has merits behind their ratings...

Less a problem of too many rules in my eyes but of too many people giving meaningless critiques accompanied by unfounded positive ratings; too many critics giving feedback to freeloaders, hence too many lazy members who get away with taking without paying back. If the site is attractive for point collectors rather than for photographers interested in improvement through constructive feedback it will lose attractiveness. At the level of just presenting the best of one's efforts and trying to become popular with main stream stuff PhotoSIG can't compete as there are too many other sites serving the same purpose that are more up-to-date in terms of design and functionality.

It's only critiques what can make a difference. So if you want to make a difference try to write better critiques - and have an eye on whom you offer your time and thoughts.

What I find more depressing is the quality of the critiques on the popular images. Very few manage to struggle on beyond the second line, and most parrot the same old stuff slightly tweaked to avoid the repetition rules. That's why I stay away from that page unless prompted to look by forum posts :-)
