I know I go thru phases here. I get busy or I am shooting or traveling and I do not submit as many pictures. Then there are other times after shooting some portraits or landscapes, I will submit more shots for critique to have another person view it and try to learn from their insights. I will say that i few years ago, you would submit a picture and before the day ended you would find it three pages back. Now it may be on the first page for a much longer time. I also see more pictures with critiques than not. I am not complaining but rather voicing an observation. This is still one of the best critique sites I frequent and you get varied people looking and talking about it. On other sites it seems that the same people with their own biases are the ones to continually critique... So well done Psig.

I agree, John. I've been a user here since 2003, and I have observed the same dynamic you're addressing. It seems like the lowest-rated photos to make the Front Page had scores in the teens; nowadays, 6 or 7 points will propel a photo onto the Front Page. I don't know that this is a bad thing, just different. In fact, as far as the Front Page photos are concerned, it's probably a good thing; in the old days, there were too many meaningless "me too" critiques piled on to photos that made the Front Page, and that seems less prevalent now.

"It seems as there are less pictures submitted".
I don't think that's any secret John. The good news is (as you implied) there are still good critics around who spend time & energy on doing crits without fear or favour. I hope we will see more crits like that & those critics deserve every Helpful click they collect.

I'd be interested to see a curve of # of photos submitted over the years (rating habits aside). Personally, I'm in a creative slump for various reasons, and haven't been here in a while. But today I felt like finding some inspiration...

I brought this up as I know I use this site at times to see where I am at. I try to learn from what is said and try to implement the changes. It is interesting how we do improve if we want too. I think it takes time to get the ideas and changes implemented into your workflow too. I will then come back and post and see what people think and if they are saying the same thing or something else. I also know I learn by critiquing others shots. It is great to say what you would do differently or what you think is right or wrong with a shot or how it can be improved, but it also means if you go and shoot that same thing or similar things you need to incorporate that into your shoot too. I try to do that with varying degrees of success.

i come back every 3-4 months because i'm making stuff to sell. and yea, the site is very slow. it used to be that in a few minutes your image was booted off the upload page. now there is a window of 3-4 hours on that page. there are less critiques too. you would think that with the amount of cameras that are out there, there would be more people here as well. but there are more POD sites also, so i guess people want money more than points.

there is another reason it's going down.
i used to pay to be on here, but decided it wasn't worth the money. other people lost their jobs and cut out expenses. besides not having the time, you no longer get any notifications. so your out of the loop when someone comments on your critique. and it makes it less fun overall. same with the forum, i have no idea when someone replies to my stuff. so you just fade off of here.
