Thanks to my wife, Beth, for this assignment idea and help on its description. Hands can be very evocative of a larger image, and convey much about the individual. This assignment deals with hands at work, that is, doing something, from cradling a baby to wielding a tool. The photo should have hands as the primary subject. While the photo will likely contain more than this, it should be clear that the hands are emphasized. I could say the hands should be the focus, but I will leave that to the photographer.
So, for this month's assignment, make a photo of working hands. This could be a person's hands, or hands of several people. You can show them in a number of ways, but the subject must be hands at work. If you find what you think is a unique view of hands, please explain it in your photographer's comment.
To qualify for this month's assignment,
- Submit a photo taken of hands
- where the hands are involved in work in its broadest sense
If you have a story to go with the photo that you want to share with us, put it in the comment area below the critiques.
If you have any questions, email an admin. If your photo is deemed to not meet our assignment criteria and hence removed, please accept our decision graciously. Our decisions are not subjects for debate, so if you are not sure, ask first. To include your entry in the assignment, just check off the box that says 2012 01 ~ Working Hands. You can view previous assignments here. You may submit as many photos as you like into the assignment. Good luck!
This assignment will be enabled on January 1 and run through January 31.

What a wonderful assignment, Del! I have taken several photos of "working" hands as part of a cooking tutorial. In some of the photos, I've asked my husband to stop moving his hands and hold them still so there's no motion blur while in other photos I wanted the motion blur. I think I will upload an old photo and as for critiques to get feedback before I try this month's assignment. I'm looking forward to it! :)
By the way, I wanted to tell you that I sometimes attempt the assignment although most of the time I don't usually upload any of the photos for feedback because usually I'm able to self-critique the resulting photos.
The assignments are a nice challenge though, and I'm looking forward to trying this one. :)

Hope you enjoy it. As for self-critique, sometimes others see things in our photos that we overlook. Just doing the assignment is constructive, but having others look at the results can be helpful even after we have done our work.

I was going upload a previous image I made on this theme, but after looking at all them, I see all the problems I need to work on so there's no need for me to submit a photo. I can tell you one thing, I've got my work cut out for me to make a better photo on this theme. :)

I decided to take your advice, Del, and post my assignment photo for feedback even though I am able to analyze the strengths and shortcomings of the photo. I have to admit I feel very silly uploading the picture and asking for feedback on a photo when I can self-critique, but I did it anyway since you said it might be helpful to have others look at the results.
